Official Canon EOS 60D User Thread Part I

Hi users of Canon 60D,

I'm a complete newbie to photography but after doing some homework I've decided to start out with the 60D along with tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 lens + Class 10 SD card.

I'm wondering if any shops can allow me to get the following combo at a good deal. Any recommendations and advice?

Anyone buying a camera anytime soon? Do drop me a PM if you dont mind me tagging along~

Cheers,
Marcus

Can go Funan to get the stuff... can consider shops like TK Foto (bought from them... :-D), SLR revolution, Alan photo (cheapest as far as I know... but don't buy their filters etc...) and John 3:16 for good service.

If u wanna go Sim Lim Square then only consider Orient Photo at the top floor...

Orient Photo i find not cheap le. If i go Sim Lim i usually visit Alan Photo, i still find them cheaper & can bargain a little.

Juz for the record for those with little faith (or too much faith) in the 17-55 F2.8

Similar settings as the "Before" shot, 55mm F8 ISO100

100% crop bottom right corner

All blurry compared to the much more define details (bird & grass) from the "Before" (brand new) shot

100% crop bottom right corner

Like I said earlier, I have no doubt your lens needs fixing. :)

However, the shot you post above is NOT a good example for checking corner performance. Your subject is a long distance away but the bottom corners of the image cover the foreground near you. It is difficult to get the entire scene in complete focus at 55 mm even if you shoot at f/11 (and this was taken at f/8). If it was taken at 17 mm and f/8, there's a good chance everything will be covered by the DOF of the lens.

I won't advise you to show the technician this photo if you want to convince him your lens has poor corner performance. Try to look for a scene with objects equidistance from you, or very far from you so that every object is covered by the DOF of the lens. :)

The whole scene is far away from me. Focus at infinity irregardless "near" or far. If u r objective enuf, the corner is not out of focus, its smugy. OOF & smugy r 2 diff things.

Like i mentioned earlier, those who wants the best for their 18MP toy shud really invest in higher quality lenses. I have no regrets getting this 17-55 even though its showing signs of wearing out, if there is an L for crop i wud probably get it to replace

doodah, any suggestion for the old 17-40L? U recommend that for this high MP toy?

Erm... I am using 24-105 mm... 24-70 is really heavy for my traveling purpose... and it has a much shorter range as well... I find 24-105 is great for candid shots and general purpose photography...

But then u will need to pair it up with a ultra wide angle... if not u will have problems taking shots of interiors or buildings and in some cases landscape...

BTW, the 17-55, 15-85 (I think) and 10-22 are L quality... but they cannot put a red ring on it as it is EF-S... do consider the above 3 lenses as well... :-D
I just came back from vacation and I have to say that the 15-85 lens was immensely useful as a walkaround lens. The wide end is good enough for most indoor shots and the tele end is sufficient, helped by the fast USM and IS. I am no expert but I find the barrel distortion quite minimal at the wide end. Did not dig into the details to find vignetting / CA though.

I only used my 50mm f/1.8 prime on a few occasions where I needed the shallow FOV to blur out the background (e.g. busy street).

Not the aged 17-40 f/4L. It is rather underwhelming and has few features (lacking f/2.8 and IS).

Looking to learning and shooting with fellow users and make my shots more pro...

Hey all,

Just a quick question...
I hv the Tamron 17-50mm lens, and the uhmm (I really have no idea what it is called) blurness at the sides seem to be much worse than sample images from reviewers...
Here are the images...
Is it just me, or is the lens faulty?

In my opinion, I don't think that this is a bad photo. Yes, it is a little blurry but considering the distance and the fact that we are looking at a 100% crop, it is expected.

I would try the shot again with the same camera/lens combo in the very same location and in similar conditions (sunny and partly cloudy). But this time, put the camera on a steady tripod and turn the VC off. Take the shot with a 2 or preferably 10 second shutter time delay. Then compare the two shots and see if there is a big difference.

If possible take the exact same shot with a different lens, preferably a 17-55 or 15-85 (both of which are well known for their sharpness). Compare again with your former shot. This should give you enough information to tell if your lens has a problem with blurriness.

Of greater concern is the chromatic aberration in your photo. You can see strong evidence of it on the right side of the photo where the building sculpture meets the sky. This of course is easily correctable in PhotoShop.
