huh? I use M mode, set shutter and aperture and auto ISO on 1D4

did I miss out something?

yes, you missed out the steps on how did you set the 1D4 to auto ISO

The only "auto ISO" on the 1D4 is the safety shift custom function.

ya, you say liao, THE CAMERA thinks the exposure is right.

but more than often, people do compensate to get their desired effect.

anyway with auto ISO, everything will be on 0EV, however you adjust the aperture and shutter speed.

of cause you can adjust the settings to force the overexposure, ie bright daylight, f2.8 + 1/500s. even with auto ISO(with 100 selected), 1/500s will result in overexposure. so you tweak from there to achieve the amount of compensation you want. but it will be very tedious, as you need to customises the setting to different conditions. and it is not always you can get the auto ISO to 100, to force the compensation(overexposure in this case).

i know it sounds confusing, but sometimes i do just that to overcome this shortcoming.

I think put it simply, I need f/2.8, 1/400s to get a certain depth of field and stop motion. Camera is on Auto ISO with Manual mode. 0EV is ISO 800. But I want the camera to compensate 1/3 stop more on the ISO. So i expect the camera to use ISO 1000 for the exposure.

Of course people argue that in Manual mode, you are in total control of all the parameters. But isn't Auto ISO and +/- EV there to make our lives easier? :p

The 600ex speed lite come with 20-200mm zoom head.
Could canon surprise us with a new lens like EF 20-1xxmm F4 L:think:

base on the 1D4,there is a way to do it actually.
u can set the max ISO speed on the camera.
example u set it at max ISO 800 and use Auto ISO.
the camera correct exposure is F2.8,1/160s ISO 800.
then if u want your exposure to be darker, you can adjust the aperture or shutter speed higher and the ISO remains at 800.

Yes one can set the limits of ISO (min and max), same goes to min/ max shutter speed and aperture but that is not auto ISO per say.

there is an "ISO" button located near the top lcd.
this button allows you to choose what ISO speed to use and it does have an option of Auto.

In this case it defeats the purpose... Because you wanted f/2.8 and 1/160s, and you want it to be that way. In manual mode, what we want to compensate for is the ISO, not aperture or shutter speed...

in this case,i don't think the camera will compensate by switching to ISO 1000.
have to do it manually on the ISO settings.

yes, you are right.

hopefully one day, this function will materialise. :(

Yes! That's our point! Because Manual mode doesn't have EV compensation...

why do u say it is not Auto ISO anymore?
i think it is still consider Auto ISO.
just that u set the ISO limits to your choice.
example,i set it to max of ISO 12k because anything above that is totally unusable.

That's what i said in my prev post.. set the shutter to move the EV + or - in M mode.

huh? not every mode will be 0EV with auto ISO leh..

yup, shoot everything in M mode as i mentioned is best.
sorry,i need to add on.
M mode can have EV compensation if you set the min/max ISO speed.
however, you need to do this by controlling the shutter speed or aperture value.

but then if u die die need that fixed shutter speed and aperture value, then cannot already.
have to manual adjust the ISO speed.

I'm getting confused by this discussion lol :dunno:

In C.Fn, we can set the min and max ISO.
Then we press the ISO button from the top LCD, we can set ISO to "Auto", and it will use the range we set in C.Fn.
The Auto ISO from the ISO button is usable in Av, Tv and M mode.

That's what I know for 1D4.. :)

it is still wise to do all in manual mode.

sometimes you just do not have all the time in the world to adjust your settings, especially in full manual mode.

i.e i like to shoot my 70-200L at f4, 1/200s(or more) with auto ISO when i am out on the streets.

at the same time, i like to have 1/3 to 2/3 stops of extra exposure but with auto ISO, it is not possible.

most of the time, you rather be focusing on capturing the fleeting moment, rather than tweaking your settings every now and then.

reason for not using Av mode is, i want my shutter speed to stay at 1/200s minimum, else i will need to keep adjusting my ISO.

reason for not using Tv mode is, i want my aperture to be at widest, which is f4.

IDK if your 7D can do it, but 5D3 can set min shutter for Av and min aperture for Tv :)

Under Custom Functions, Exposure - set min and max shutter speed and aperture.

alamak, i think you don't understand.

i want a constant aperture and shutter speed and let the ISO auto adjust to 0EV(then add another 1/3 to 2/3 of EC but this is not possible).

constant aperture and shutter speed can only be had in M mode.

IDK if your 7D can do it, but 5D3 can set min shutter for Av and min aperture for Tv :)

can set ah? i don't know leh, maybe new in 5DMK3.

but also no use, cause you still need to keep adjusting ISO manually to maintain the min shutter speed/aperture as the auto ISO cannot do EC.

You try go custom functions (exposure), check can set min and max shutter speed range and aperture range?

I know if there's this function, the default is:
- Aperture: min f/1.0, max f/91
- Shutter: min 30s, max 1/8000s

I think 7D should be can bah, it's quite a new model..

if you shoot street in bring day light, you can do ISO200, set min shutter 1/200s, then make use of EC. I think ISO200 with min 1/200s @ f/4 have rooms for play under board daylight :)
