That doesn't sound right. You can set the * button + top wheel/ m-fn button to choose your af point type. You can also go into the menu and adjust it so that you can choose only between single AF point and the other zone AF that you use. That way you will always only have two choices for af.

Furthermore you can set the AF to any of the 4 choices (61 pt, 41 cross type, 15, 9) and single point af will work with joystick on any of these options easily.

No, what i meant was going to Spot AF on the fly with the press of a button…not having to press multiple buttons or to use the scroll wheel on top.
For example…if i'm using the zone AF and when i suddenly need to switch to Spot AF, i can just press the * button and it automatically switches to Spot AF instead of having to change it via the scroll wheel.
Presently, the only buttons i can set to do this is the DOF button…no other buttons have this capability…even the manual says so…unlike the 1DX where you can use a variety of buttons to do this...

You are not expecting every single feature that 1DX has to be on 5D3 as well, do you?

Has anyone tried using a Canon ST-E2 wireless transmitter as AF-IR assist beam with the 5D3 for extremely low light situations?

To answer my own question, I went out and bought a ST-E2 and it works great. It is larger than I expected it to be but alot smaller and lighter than a flash but I can now focus in almost complete darkness, something that the camera would not do even with Live View.

I have only tried center focus so far.

You can change custom control to use the SET button as magnify.

Then change the playback so that when you press SET it will magnify to whatever magnification you always look at.

That way you don't have to turn the wheel at all.

i still have to turn the wheel when i want to gradually magnify or reduce using the wheel and this is not what i want.

No but this was one "feature" that almost all photographers wished Canon put into the 5D3 because all the Nikons have it and they finally decided to include it into the 1DX, i'm pretty sure they could've done it with the 5D3…it's just software mapping of buttons…not something incredibly difficult to do..heck the menu system is the same as the 1DX.
Actually, for the 5D3, i realised that you could do it somewhat with the joystick…you can set the pressing of the joystick to change the focusing to Spot AF…BUT somehow Canon decided that you can ONLY switch when in full auto 61pt AF and not anything else….what's the point then if you don't use 61pt auto AF

i still have to turn the wheel when i want to gradually magnify or reduce using the wheel and this is not what i want.

You can always set the magnification default to something more..I set mine to 8x so i get 8x magnification everytime i press the zoom button by default.

You have 2 options: (i) jump ship or (ii) wait for feature to be implemented in 5D MkY where Y = 4 or 5 or 6 or 7...

You are in Canon-land where features will ALWAYS be handicapped in lesser models. But remember when you go to Nikon-land, you'll need 2 hands to get to some of the most important features on your camera. As they say, the grass is always greener on the other side...

Edit: You have a third option: see if MagicLantern introduces this feature...

Hmm.. well they can turn 7D series into APS-H sensors because 1D and 5D will now be FF sensor series. But if 7D changes to APS-H, I would expect that the price of 7D2 to be much more expensive.

Speaking of birdies, wildlife and sports who may want a crop - I've having mixed feelings. Before 1DX, there is a reason for one to own both 1Ds and 1D - FF for portraits, landscapes etc while the crop for wildlife and sports. Some would own a 1D + 5D instead for a FF + crop combo. These people who owned the 1D will get used to the build, weather seal and the quality of the 1D.
So how will a APS-H 7D2 attract birders who want something soildly built whith reliable weather seal? If they improve too much on the 7D series, it would make it too close to the 5D which is supposed to be a higher line, and Canon has the practice to seperate their line of bodies very carefully. It would make 7D too expensive for it's targetted group too.

If APS-H were to be retained, maybe a 3D or something in between a 1D and 5D would sound more probable.

But that's just my views :p

so to u 7d is not reliable weather seal at all?did u use a 7d before?it build like a rock.

FYI canon patent a 50MP sensor 2 year back,is jus a matter of time they will put in a 1 series.5D AND 7D will be they main semi pro camera or even pro series.and putting 1 series into mid format.

my bad,is 120MP NOT 50MP

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I just noticed that Lightroom 4.1 RC is out and it now supports the Canon 5D3.

Order from B&H.

Great news for those using Apple….they have finally released the latest Digital Camera Raw Compatibility update to support the 5D3….it's about time! i've been waiting for this for a long time now..time to play with RAW!

bro...where to get a good screen protector?

I had tried using the eye-fi in 5DMK3 to do wireless file transfer to IPad. It work beautifully. Lesser set up needed to establish the wireless link in direct mode. No need to buy WFT-E7. Can save the money for a battery grip and ST-E3.
