To answer my own question, I went out and bought a ST-E2 and it works great. It is larger than I expected it to be but alot smaller and lighter than a flash but I can now focus in almost complete darkness, something that the camera would not do even with Live View.

I have only tried center focus so far.

This is good news as I already have the ST-E2. :)

Does anybody know how much a new battery for this equipment costs? :dunno:

Hi Ppl, I recently took the 5d3 out to do long exposures. I noticed a bright pixel appearing in every one of the long exposure images at the same spot. Checked online and found that hot pixels are common for digital cameras. Want to know if you have encountered this and if this is something that is really common ?

Is there any difference in speed between CF or SD if both have the same write speed spec?
CF is much more expensive than SD, so does it
Make more sense to use SD as primary instead ?
Example: sandisk extreme pro.
If fact, the SD format is 5mb/sec faster than the CF version.

Those speed are advertised at their maximum transfer rate. CF will always be faster than SD hence it's more expensive. This is also why the 1DX now uses dual CF rather than dual CF/SD slot.

The SD slot in the 5D3 is not UHS compliant so it will max out at 30mb/s with actual speed of about 20mb/s. Hence there is no point using the faster SD card on the 5D3. On the other hand, the CF slot supports UDMA 7, which is currently the faster CF card in the market.

Only 30mb/sec ! Than putting in a 60mb/sec
SD card means wasting $ right.

I used to have a camera that I bought brand new in Hong Kong that had a hot pixel. The hot pixel appeared only after taking long exposure shots at night. It was easy to fix in post processing but it was disheartening to see the same red dot shot after shot. I've long sold that camera. Of the several Canon models that I've owned, that is the only one which had this problem. So to answer your question... is it common... I would say that it is common enough but it is the exception rather than the rule.

I would suggest that while your 5D3 is still under warranty, take it to CSC and have them look at it. After paying a premium price for a high quality camera, a hot pixel should be unacceptable... particularly when we are still in the honeymoon phase.

Gotta love the silent shutter, my friends don't even notice i took photos of them :)

What's the trade off for using the silent shutter mode vs normal mode?
