Indeed, since the vertical grip for 1 Series is integrated.

I think some bros have the same qn for 5D3, so I just asked Canon about it. I was thinking the same thing as you - water may still enter the cam via the battery compartment of the cam if the grip is not screwed tightly. Even so, the grip may loosen from time to time and we need to ensure that the grip is screwed tightly to the body.

And I do not really think that BG has any kind of weather sealing capabilities.. and I don't think the BG's battery compartment is weather sealed too.

But the thing is, some of us really need the vertical grip just because we shoot verticals frequently. And buying a 1D because of this, is kind of silly :p

then i guess just need to see what is more impt right? vertical grip or weather sealing. i think for most people, weather sealing is not a need whereas shooting for long periods in portrait orientation is more impt.

the way the batteries are put into the grip reminds me of the 1 series. quite cool.

hmmm y not buy the battery grip, and gaffer tape / carbon fibre tape to cover the gap between battery grip and 5D3 body. should be quite safe that water won't go in from the 5D3 battery compartment then?

The grip's battery door has the same kind of "foamy" water resistent material like the 5D3's own battery door.

Now the question is, will the base of the extension from the grip into the battery cavity have some form of sealing? That would be biggest area of concern.

yup, you are right on. I think most of the 5D3 users are not worrying too much about weather sealing as we are unlikely to shoot in extreme conditions. Any photog who shoot in such conditions are probably full time photogs on a commissioned project/job, and certain would call upon the 1D series. But resistance to light rain or drizzle is desired though, since SG is pretty rainy.

And yes, the design of BG-E11's battery compartment is great. In fact, it lessens the surface area of the entrance to the BG's internal compartments, means lesser chance for water entry.

hmm gaffer tape sounds like an idea. tape up the whole BG and the gap.

I wanted to upgrade my current 500D to 5DM3 but I find it strange that 5dm3 has been widely promoting its video capabilities when this is a STILL picture camera. Of course the high ISO improvement is good but not often I will use it. Just an honest opinion and please don't flame me, the pics quality seen so far posted by users are only so-so and some are not even clear let alone sharp! To part $4k plus is a bit of a heart pain.

well, that's entirely up to you, honestly speaking.

"clear" and "sharp" is relative. and it may be caused by the photog itself (handshake).

maybe you can start by sharing something that you have shot with your 500D that is clear and sharp, so that we know what is your definition of clear and sharp.

For me i wont gaffer because of the usual problem with gaffer tape. Also taking it out will be troublesome as well.

There are some foam there as well.

Small production companies are using dslr to shoot because it saves them money. Just worked with channel u for a new show where part of it was shot with 5d2 and 7d. Lousy pix cos we are lousy photog. Haha. Maybe ur images are strong artistically so u dun need a low noise full frame cam?

Sweeeeet. I feel better about the weather resistance with the grip on already!

Just adding on/

Yep, the video mode on the still camera must be bloody useless. What do these people know!

You got a still camera that can double as a very good video camera. What's there to not like? Unless of course, you don't do video. But that's YOUR needs. Limpeh happy can liao lol

There are endless possibilities you can do with a 5Dmk3 for video.
There are advantages of using such camera for shooting HD video. Short films, productions or even movies are using such tools nowadays. Google and YouTube it, and you will find out why. :)

weekend liao. all ready to go take awesome photos.

Please test the Al Servo AF too, don't just shoot high ISO stuff!

Yes,this is what iam interested to find out too.
Using AI servo AF when subject is lock in focus, does it light up on the specific 1 or 2 focus point(s)?

It would also depend on why you think you need an upgrade.
If image quality is your major concern and the $4k pricetag bugs you, you could consider going to a 60D, 7D or even a 5DmkII first.
500D to a 5DmkIII IS a very big jump cost-wise.

glad to know that everybody is finally ditching the crappy mark2

Just finished my walk-about at Funan for the 5D3 kit. Most of the shops except TK foto and Alan Photo have stock. Most have at least 1 piece and only John3:16 has more than 2 (I wonder why... :P). Cheapest surprisingly was at CP at Peninsula selling for $5385 cash. Hope the list below helps:

1) CP: $5385
2) SLRR: $5386
3) Song Bro & South Asia: $5390

All the price above are for cash sales and GST inclusive.

Forget about Bally Photo, HN and John3:16 at Funan. At least close to $200 more. That said The lady at HN I spoke to offered to throw in a brand new battery plus camera bag as free gift as well but total still more expensive than the shops listed above.

Sadly after walking around for so long with cash in my bag, I decided not to buy but to wait for a while. :( Heard from someone in my favourite shop the price would adjust further down soon. So have to curb my enthusiasm and wait for a while more.... :(
