17-40mm is best used from 20mm and above and the corners are not that bad.... below 20mm, it is bad... but you buy a UWA for FF, and if 17-20mm corner is not sharp.. it could be an issue for some..... but on APS sensor.... I think it is still ok....... 17-40mm was my main lens till I got 17-55mm......

Do note that when you rent lens, lens variation does exist too......

gonna use the 17-40L on 5DMK3.

currently on 10-22 + 17-55 with 7D.

i'm not after super sharp photos, i'm cool as long as the 17-40L performs similar to my 10-22 at widest focal length.

yeah i know IQ may varies but i guess will not have too big a difference?

What other lens do you have??? Is the UWA a MUST for you???

I have seen some samples of 17-40mm on FF, and not from personal experience so hard to compare.......

If the distortion is ok for you and you do not print very big.... should be livable...

Why not sell the 17-55 and get a 24-70L for the 5D MkIII. Their focal ranges sort of overlap. You got two ultra-wide lenses for what? Too much redundancies! Keep it simple!

10-22, 17-55, 70-200L. i can live without the 17-55 equivalent on FF but UWA is a MUST!

i don't print big, at most 4R/8R.

very low chance i will get 24-70L as it doesn't have IS and i find that i shoot UWA and tele more often.

at most i get a 50 prime for indoor portraits(which is the primary use of the 17-55).

There's another who also UWA siao too.... did not realised Mr Tecnica is also one of them...... :)

Sell the 10-22 and 17-55, get 17-40L and 70-200L F4 IS. Then you can use both lenses on either body.

If sell 10-22 & 17-55, can get the 16-35mm II liao......

But I think this year, Canon Rumor they will launched a lot of lens... so really think wait a yr and see how, esp since the patent for 17-40mm f/2.8-4 is already out.....

i know the 16-35L II is great but i want to know how 'bad' the 17-40L is.

thanks for the links anyway!

Hi bro, I have uploaded a full-res 10MP file here: 00900-Y10.tif

Taken with 17-40L on 1D Mark III, 1/200s at f/11 @ 16mm. Saturation/colors was adjusted and some dust spots cloned out, sharpness was straight out of the camera with no USM applied.

You may compare center sharpness vs extreme corners. Take note again, that this was shot with an APS-H cropped sensor.

I wouldn't bet on that!

I don't doubt that the price WILL drop.
3, 6, 9 or 12 months? Who knows?
When it does, I'm not going to feel sore. The price of early adoption that I'm happy to live with.
The emphasis of my statement is "too drastically", not "drop".
10% drop on the street price in the next 3-6 months drastic enough?
I won't complain or say "dang, I should have waited 3-6 months"

I'm no pro nor do I earn any income from my photos.
I hardly even print or upload my photos onto the internet.
I love capturing the moment.
The ability to do so in a way closer to how I see the world through my eyes is priceless.
*peace*;)

Hi everyone, sorry to barge in. Anyone know where's the best price I could get for 5D Mark III (body only) and it's still in stock? Hoping to buy one this Friday.

I don't quite know how bad the corner softness if..to me it seems all right..
Well, i took some a shot at 17mm at f4…is it really soft? The mk3 has some correction data built in, not sure how that helps..

just bought the camera this evening. have some shoots coming up that i really wanna make use of with the new camera. shooting interiors tmr so the built in vf grid will be great. now the problem is raw conversion ... :(

it is not easy to judge sharpness on your pic because not all objects (subjects) are on the same focal plane. If possible you may try taking a shot of the opposite building block and check the sharpness in the middle and corners.

You want WIDE on the 5D ?? There's nothing wider with AF in rectilinear .. Sigma 12-24.

Compare the left center/bottom against center center/bottom. The difference is obvious.
