How to focus to infinity? (does this mean, at a point when you turn the focus ring, everything is sharp even the object close to you, including the background which is far far away?)

What's hyperfocal distance? Did a google and couldn't really understand it.
Sometimes, wiki is better than google.

hello,

may i check if anyone got the 550d body(only) at <$1099? i checked the price list and it was updated only til apr10. $1099 is found @ SLRR. also thinking of getting a 3rd party battery + 16gb cards - are accessories in HK cheaper? i only know that the lenses are generally cheaper. i'm going there for a vacation soon. :)

tote bag better? so yr memory card n bag taken from ms color?

err. its bigger. and its more girls actually. looks like it anyway. and it looks like leather? nope. have to go down canon ctr to collect.

Thanks! I do get it somehow. But what does it exactly mean when it says focus at infinity? (does it mean that you turn the focus ring on your camera so that it focuses the furthest object and yet all things are still clear?)

Hi! well something like that. Focusing at infinity means the rays come in parallel to the lens (if i recall correctly). Normally there is an infinity mark on your distance marking on the lens.. or..turn all the way toward tt direction :)

I noticed your signature.... not happy with your 550D and wanting for a nikon?

nono, dun get me wrong. d90 had always been the camera of my original choice. i went one big round because at that time d90 was out of stock for 1 month or so, then i bought the 50D as i cldn't wait already. that was how i got into canon. anyway while i was in poly 2 years ago, i used a d300 for my internship and somehow like how nikon operates. and after exploring canon, i feel nikon is the one for me. actually after the 50D i wanted to go buy the d90, but i already had invested in some canon lenses like 17-40/15-85...so i didn't want to waste money switching to nikon. but now...after last week's drastic price drop of the d90 and the battery grip...i just took the plunge and go back to nikon. i guess you can say its a homecoming sorta thing. canon is good, but they make me feel like they are some PAY AND PAY company. for a lens hood, you gotta buy seperately. sian. and what's more, they dun have decent lenses below a thousand bucks for the EFS series. its really sad. do you know now the d90 + 18-105 (which is a lens better than canon's prosumer kit offerings apart from the 15-85) costs only $1477 now @ SLR Revo? it's a bloody steal! so that's why i took the plunge. anyway my pals are on nikon, and that was another factor too.

the canon 550D is a very smart camera. but if you notice, canon is basically just playing "catch up" with nikon in the camera department (lens not so). what 550D had, the d90 already had 2 years ago. but if we are talking abt Auto WB, the canon is more accurate. yup. ok, i shan't go on anymore cuz this isn't a nikon vs canon thread. just sharing my own very very personal thoughts only. please dun take any of these to heart!

Infinity mark on my distance marking on the lens? don't quite get this part.

What you mean by focusing at infinity means the rays come in parallel to the lens? I read this at wikipedia itself and don't get it, possible to explain in layman terms? :embrass:

I think the technical part no need to understand so cheem ba. just to know that focusing after a certain distance, the light coming towards the lens/sensor is almost a straight line le .. like ====|

so when u autofocus at a far away place...most likely it's at infinity. we normally do this for landscape where u want to take e background/foreground sharp (+ high f-stops).

it's just that like for taking certain shots, like landscape..or maybe night photography..fireworks? it's better to turn on manual and set focus to infinity so that the AF system wun screw up! (definitely fireworks :bsmilie:)

Something I'm not sure about is about "beyond infinity focus"...but that's beyond my needs currently i think. hahahah :bsmilie:

Any tips to share on using manual focus? Realise when i use MF, the pictures i take tend to be blur altho i adjusted the focus ring. :(

If you use live view, you can zoom in on the display and adjust the focus very precisely. I find this gives much sharper manual focus than the viewfinder.

Any recommendations for a cleaning kit, or any minimum equipment like the blower (correct name?)? :)

I learned this trick from the pro here. Thanks guys.

Especially, useful when shooting macro. :>

I got myself,

Lenspen ($18 for a pack of 3 different size of lenspen)
Nikon cleaning kit($18) comes with - blower, non alcohol solution for cleaning lens and LCDs, lens cleaning paper, a small brush, 2 one time cleaning wipe and 1 cleaning cloth

I think should be enough already.

Hi guys. I am charging my battery now and there some sound coming out from the charger. anyone with the same problem?

Mine has the static sound as well, not sure if it's normal for 550D charger. When you plug it in, for a start, it'll have the sound then it'll be gone after that..
