Ask you guys...anyone attended the free lessons?

What did they teach you ? Haha was considering letting my gf go instead. I spent almost 12 hours a day reading photography for the last 4 weeks online (cuz IA, more free - ) and about 10 books from the library already. If it's good stuff there's no way I'm not passing up the chance on learning at all :bsmilie::bsmilie:
It’s very basic stuff like how to switch between modes and what each mode and feature does.

If you understand how to set Aperture, ISO and Shutter speed, and know how they all work together, you’re probably over qualified for the course.

FYI. I do think if you get her to go you’ll have to let her bring a CANON camera. There’s also a difference between the DSLR class and the PnS class. So if she signs for the DSLR one, you’ll prob have to lend her your 550D to go.

eg - i don't tweak the profile settings much as i prefer to shoot raw for important shots, but would be good to learn more :)

Wow, would be good to share some tips with us :D

i got a spare batt for 550D any takers?

Original or 3rd party?

I think most things you know le ba! see your photos!!

Think the most applicable thing i read is from Outdoor Photographer : Landscape and Nature Photography - can get from library :bsmilie:

it's the PS part that is quite useful..the author employed Ansel Adams strategy to darkroom to PS..so quite interesting - Ansel Adams is one of those big names in landscape-nature photography jus in case you all not sure ! haha

currently studying portrait lighting or flash photography in general - very challenging cause most of the equipment, do not have! Want to buy flash soon when can find $$.

Oh I did this last monday cause I was bored to death staying home alone. Sobs. need photographer khakis and seniors to teach me hehe

Amongst others... put on my fb instead of flickr cuz was some random pics only haha!
The 2nd shot was done earlier - Note the shallow DOF - I stopped down the aperture to f8 much much later cuz i forgot to make a mental note @@. Shot with built in flash - with flash exposure dialed down for more sharp image. I preferred this due to the composition though! Haha. the lens filter was spotted with splashes, some images can see "dirt-like" spots

Seriously those shots i took, many commented that it's nothing outstanding tho :( Which i agree.. Sad..

Anyway the picture you took, at slow shutter speed and processed it with PS to make it 'red'?

blueacid: taken at X-sync speed 1/200s - MUST use flash. (dun use full power)

The redness comes from the colour of the bowl. can play with other colours, even backlit (semitransparent) orangey/blue/purple thing . For me I just used the black part of a reflector.

Didn't do any PS...only cropping (other pics)
Yups!

X-sync speed? What's that? Shutter speed 1/200s? Yours is external flash or built in flash? How not to use full power?

Pardon my noob questions :embrass:

Don't worry, I'm also noob ma! I bought my first dslr about 4 sats ago haha!

Anyway, that's the fastest shutter speed that our 550D can go with flash. So, 1/200s!
Ah, built in flash.

You can set the flash exposure compensation in the menu..tune it down :)

Yeah i do know how to adjust the Flash exposure compensation. How to do you know that 1/200s is the fastest that our 550D can go with flash?

Check with you, the AEB function, if they say set to 2 3/4, how do i go about setting? as there's 2 bar to adjust. If you get what i mean.. haha.

The X-Sync speed can check online...all the rebel series are 200 or slower. Only the semi-pro pro models is like 1/250 or more

About the AEB, i'm not sure if im answering rightly, but:
Our settings each bar is 1/3 step, so the 3rd bar is 1 exposure, 6th bar is 2 exposure.
1/3, 2/3 , 3/3(1), 1 & 1/3, 1 & 2/3, (2).

You notice when you turn the speed dial the bars go left and right, right?
Every click is 1/3 stop under and over exposure. so if you chose the 3rd bar, you will shoot 3 images - 1 underexposed, 1 normal, 1 over exposed. And so on (think u know this alr?)

2 stop AEB is our limit... to overcome this we could use exposure compensation with AEB.

as for 2 3/4, I know we can change our exposure steps but I didn't try with AEB, so i'm not sure can achieve 3/4 anot! sry haha

Erm normally people go in full stops i think... so they say 1 stop AEB, means you select the 3rd bar(the middle bar indicates normal, 1 bar left = 1 stop underexposed, 1 bar right = 1 stop overexposed) Nikon users can bracket alot more >.< we're very limited !

if i want more..what i do is i shoot at 1 stop AEB, followed by a 2 stop AEB...so all together got 6 images -2 -1 0 0 +1 +2

Anyway why would anyone use more than 2 stop AEB?

What about the top bar before the 'sub-bar' that you say about the 1/3, 2/3, 3/3 (1).

What does it do exactly?

So people who take pictures with -2, -1, 0, 1, 2 exposure for HDR effects, they just adjust the top bar instead of the one below which the left and right 'marker' moves when you turn the speed dial?

blueacidic: for HDR images :) some people prefer at least 5..some 7..some 9!

The top bar is the exposure compensation u set with ur <> buttons

The bottom which u use ur dial to turn is the AEB.

Nono, they adjust the bottom bar!
For canon anw w exposure compensation at 0

1) AEB @ 1 stop (bottom one show 2 bars left and right at 1) - shoot in continuous mode u get 3 pics

2) set the AEB now to 2 stop (bottom one show 2 bars left and right now at 2) - shoot in continuous mode u get another 3 pics

wahh... the so many bar bar... i think if can, meeting up will be so much easier. with someone willing to share his exp on the 550d ya. hee

Quickest way to understand is to try it out!

set AEB to + - 1 stop, shoot 3 in continuous mode
set AEB to + - 2 stop, shoot 3 in continuous mode

i guarantee u will understand straight away when u see the pics haha

oh and AEB not just limited to HDR i suppose...maybe u unsure of the exposure and not much time to shoot (must shoot n go or something)..then turn it on, shoot 3, and be happy XD
best to shoot in raw - even safer. And of course...other uses :bsmilie:

I get what you mean, but if i do at + - 1 stop, shoot in continuous mode, the 3 pics taken are at -1,0,+1?

And if i do at + - 2 stop, shoot in continuous mode, the 3 pics taken is -2,0,+2?

Exactly, probably you can arrange a gathering, and see whose willing to meet up and share tips with one another! That will be great! :bsmilie:

Absolutely right :)
