Official Canon 550D User Thread

Guys, Which Flash are U using along with Ur 550D ?
Can recommend me, wireless flash that can keep built in flash off and trigger only external flash.

For wireless flash, you can choose (depend on your budget):
1. ST-E2 and 430EX II
2. ST-E2 and 580EX II
3. 580EXII and 430EX II

Above setup can do ETTL... you can also get a cheaper solution (but lose the ETTL features) by using those china brand wireless trigger (check out the Mass Sales section) to replace the ST-E2.


Alternatively, you can also get a third party flash like sigma 500DG or nissin (or any other brand).

Not sure if this queries has been answered before so posting here ..

I am pretty new to DSLR world (3 days now) so most of time working with Standard Mode in Canon 550D ..

when taking a potrait picture using Auto mode, flash fire and images comes out to be too red in colour but when used no flash mode it captures a nice one .. not sure y so ..

Also .. any setting recommendation when taking a pictures at night parties .. as people move around a lot I find Images coming out to be blurr; Mode tried - Auto .. Night potrait ...

Change to Av mode, shoot at ISO HI. Make sure IS on lens is enable. This is the only way to shoot with kit lens without flash.

Noisy images still better than no images. When resize the images to 2MP (1600 x 1200), u still be able to see what is happening at ur party.

increase the sharpness settings in your profile and resize all images to 10Megapixels.
Now u have sharp image, unless the picture is OOF.

One of the reason is I don't quite like the AF motor sound.:embrass: Wanna try USM silence. Wonder if 550 sensor issue or lens that is AF slowness.
And the pic is okay acceptable sharpness.

15-85 is USM. you might try it out if you like the range (since you want to zoom/tele a bit)
my avatar (white tiger) was shot using this lens. it was cropped to about 25% since the 85mm can't reach la. but image is still fairly sharp. sharpened more in PP

What exactly does the ETTL do?

Googled and got this :

Through The Lens metering, of TTL is a generic term used to describe any camera which uses an internal metering system to control exposure in an automatic or partially automatic way. Canon used "TTL" to describe the metering system it is film cameras, then designated the metering in early digital cameras as "E-TTL". The newest generation (since the 20D) have ""E-TTL-II" metering. The goal of this tutorial is to explain the difference and they affect the operation of the Canon flashes.

For night party, you need a fast lens.
You can try to use 50mm f/1.8

- Set the camera to Av mode
- Set the aperture to f/1.8
- Set Iso to Auto
- Take the picture...

When using 50mm, the auto iso will give you speed about 1/50 - 1/60sec.
Check your photo results, if the picture still blur (because people moving), change the iso manually to the higher iso (to get a higher shutter speed).

Simple term is: The camera will adjust the flash light intesity automatically to get a proper exposure.

You can try this using your built in flash (also applicable if you use external flash):
1. Pop up your internal flash
2. Set to M mode
3. Set aperture to f/4.0 and shutter speed 1/50 (using kit lens 18-55)
4. Set iso 100
4. Take picture of an object

And compare with:
same as above, except change no (3) to f/8.0


Results?
The exposure should be the same.

1) I will use my S5 IS with external flash at 1/30 shutter speed at F2.7 or 10-22mm lens, set Aperature at F8 and shoot with fill-in flash.

2) Use 10-22mm at 10mm, tell ur subject to stand more than 1 meter away from camera, then shoot. This lens focus at infinity from 1m onwards

3) Use a polariser.

U will need to get Canon EF-S 10-22 to get max DOF when DSLR. Oh yeah, a tripod too.

Hi guys,

I'm probably gonna get a Kit II sometime soon. Am thinking of getting a portrait lens to go along.

Was looking into the 50mm f1.8 II & the f1.4 USM. How much more expensive is the f1.4, and is it worth paying extra to get that? I notice a lot of bros here using the f1.8 with the 550D. Can share experience and advice?
