Official Canon 550D User Thread Part IV

Alright, then what will be the different between Tamron 17-50mm and Canon 17-85mm lens? I'm still attracted by canon's longer reach, but till now nobody has answer me why that lens is not recommended.

the tamron 17-50 has a constant aperture of f2.8 which is useful if you shoot at night alot or you favour the thin DOF that it provides.

the 17-85 is a pretty slow aperture lens, starting at f4 and ending at f5.6. Also, the lens is no way as sharp as the 17-50 wide open. at 17mm it is quite blurry at the corners unless u stop down and at 85mm, it also isnt very sharp.

If you are considering a walkabout zoom, do consider sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS HSM and canon 15-85. these 2 are sharp and offer a good range.

All the best in your lens decision!

i have the L version of that lens and i think that the performance of the non-L version is not far behind. I can tell you that the performance of the lens is stunning, get the lens and u definitely wont regret it cos it opens up another world of photography opportunities.

Price should be about $185 iirc. :)

I'm looking to buy a 2nd hand Canon 18-55 lens IS. Been looking out here, and there, but no one is selling only the lens. Anyone know where can I get a 2nd hand lens? And how much does it cost roughly?

I just bought a 2nd hand 550D, and it comes with a telephoto lens ie 55-200 IS.

Let me know, and thks for helping =)

Hi litefiter,

I am interested in the 100mm f2.8L lens also! May I know whether is it just limited to shooting macro or can we use it to shoot portraits as well? If it can do the latter too, what do you personally think about the IQ generated by this lens? Thanks in advanced for your advice!

the lens isnt limited to macro only. it is extremely sharp corner to corner even wide open, so it can do portraits too. the extremely fast af, once u select your af distance, allows u to shoot sports as well.

Hi,

Interested to get the body only. Can I check if my old 28-105 USM lens will work with this body ?

Thks in advance.

Ahh... Thanks man! Will be getting this lens once I saved enough. Thanks again!

i would go for 180mm f/3.5 macro since i have the 85mm..

anyway if you wanna take insects or flowers, 100mm is just too wide for me..

Yes the EF 28-105 USM lens will work just fine with a 550D. In fact, that's what I use most of the time with my 550D. :)
