Official Canon 550D User Thread Part IV

Wow, I've learned a lot of nice things in this thread.

Guys, I need your opinions/suggestions. I am planning to purchase a lens for wedding coverage. Stuck between 17-55mm F2.8 and 24-105mm f4l. Which one should I choose? Or are there any other lens anyone can recommend? I'm using 550D with 580EX II. Thanks in advance!

I say go for the 17-55. 24mm on a crop frame is a tad bit too narrow for group shots. Esp when you're shooting weddings, very little time to position yourself away to get a good frame.

Thanks very much for the inputs. How about the zoom end and the bokeh? Any inputs in comparison? Thanks!

buy the 24-105L only if you just wanna own a red ring.

Red ring is not a factor for me between these lens. I need personal experiences from fellow cs'ers to weight the pros and cons to help me decide. I've read a lot of reviews between these lens but still uncertain which one is more suitable for wedding coverage.

imo on crop, 17-55 > 24-105L

f2.8 vs f4.0
17mm vs 24mm

but of cause' you get weather sealing, better build quality and longer range with the 24-105L.

17-55mm would be a better choice due to it's wideness and maximum aperture of f/2.8 with IS which can allow you to shoot better in low-light condition (without the use of flash).

The bokeh is around the same if you're just talking about crop sensors. Tried both on my crop and churned out almost the same results.

The 17-55 on a crop would be around 27-88mm. The weather sealing is a tad bit underutilized as the 550D is in itself not weather sealed. You're only as strong as your weakest link.

The 17-55 would still be better unless TS has every intention to switch to FF soon.

hi guys, would like to ask your, how do i lock my subject in forcus while i shift my lens slightly away from the subject? i'm using canon 550d. thanks.

Half press the shutter button then shift..
Make sure the shift is parallel to the plane of focus, or not your subject will still be oof..
Hope this helps :)

Oh...
Do not let go of the shutter as you shift...
After you finish shifting then depress the button fully...

Thanks guys, guess I'll go for 17-55 then! Cheers to everyone!

Haha good for you!.

I always wonder to myself how i can convince people the 17-55 is better for crop sensors but i still get a 24-70 myself x.x:embrass:

erm... so what you mean is i only set the center AF point to focus onto the subject and shift my view finder, the subject will still stay in focus? (:

Hi, does anyone here already tried to change the original rubber grip to a better rubber grip? Or did a modification on rubber grip? Thanks.

Litlefiter: thanks for the heads up, so u think 17-55 f2.8 is better than 24-70 f2.8? I was considering the latter.
