Thanks for all the information. Just bought 550D (2nd hand). Hopefully, i am able to utilise the functions since i am new to dslr. It comes with a 55-250mm lens + other accessories. The seller includes eos550D user guide as well.

Excited yet nervous. based on the reply given, think I may consider buying another 18-55mm lens, a 2nd hand one. Hopefully, it costs about $100.

congrats on your new purchase! u should buy the 18-55, it would open up a world of opportunities and it is also a good walkaround lens. If u dun want to keep upgrading, u can try tamron 17-50 f2.8. it is pretty decent and the price is good too!

tamron 17-50 f/2.8 :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

wats the price of tamron 17-50 f/2.8? and where can I purchase it? If i am to use this lens, I wouldnt need 18-55mm? Oh yes, I wouldnt want to keep on upgrading for now at least. =) so i need a multi purpose (if there is one in e first place) lens that can take varieties of photos.

Think around $500+ or so in the BnS section. It's available in the many shops in Funan. Just remember to shop around and get a few quotes.

Yes you wouldn't need the 18-55mm after you get the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8. You wouldn't want to after you see the IQ produced by the Tammy. Definitely many notch higher than those produced by the 18-55mm. The fixed f/2.8 is a big plus too. The Tammy is definitely a more versatile lens than the 18-55mm. Or if you have more budget, can consider the Canon 17-55mm f/2.8. Cost 3x more than the Tammy but I've never regretted splurging the cash on this one.:heart::heart:

Hi guys.
Do you think it is necessary to get another 50mm 1.8 if i already have the tamron 17-50mm?
IQ wise not that much of a difference right?

*gulp so expensive! shall consider tt anw. or will look for a 2nd hand one. ;) Else, i will just get a 2nd hand 18-55mm lens and interchangeably with the existing existing EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens. Shd be ok for now at least. is Tamron a third party lens?

i dont think it's necessary..
since the tammy is quite capable in low light at 2.8 as well..

just my 2 cents

Beginner, hobbyist who don't wish to commit with so much money into photography.

- Canon EFS 18-55mm $100
- Canon EFS 55-250mm $380

Should be good enough.

Beginner, hobbyist who don't mind spending more money into photography and waste lesser time in upgrading.

- Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 $900
- Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 $700
- Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 $1100

If handled carefully, this above setup can last for another 10-15 years. Perhaps, one don't fall into the Buy Buy Buy syndrome.:devil:

It will depends on the person.
For me, maybe not really necessary, even i have 50mm f1.4 and i rarely use that lens, and i prefer to use my 24-70mm f2.8L all the time, which is more flexible to use.. f2.8 is quite enough for lowlight

it would be better to buy a flash then invest on many f1.x primes. it really opens up many photography opportunities and allow u to shoot in low light, because some times even f1.8 may have a too shallow DOF or is not sufficient to get a decent shutterspeed

Are you sure?

Actually got my 550D in July! But now then saw this thread! COOL!!!!!

at least invest one lens f1.x primes :) like the bokeh

Hi all, gotten my 550D back in Sept during the show period.

However, need to ask the experts here. I've just gotten the Tamron 17-50 nonVC yesterday and apparently my kit lens 18-55 is sharper at certain aperture than the Tamron? Could it be due to me or I've gotten myself a lemon?

Agreed! Its a great lens, shot with ambient light and still the photos turn out sharp. Able to capture the moment.

are you comparing at same aperture, focal length? also, are you comparing just center sharpness or center + side or corner sharpness? you may also want to check whether your particular copy of the Tamron front/back-focuses. i hope your tests are done on a tripod (at least for the smaller apertures).

Hmm.. No idea why my first day shoot was pretty poor for the Tamron. Anyway, I've just re-shoot some pics to compare the results and this time f2.8 is clearly sharper, but f5.6 and f8 seems no diff.

Camera - 550D
WB - White Fluorescent
No filters
ISO - Auto.
IS turned off for the Canon 18-55.

No tripod, so I used my ironing board as the stand.
Focal point is the Ciba Vision logo.
