The problem for most of us here is that when we started out shooting, we don't know what we like to shoot, thus for some, they buy and buy different types of lenses.

Some may have 6-7 lenses but only use 2 the most often.

To save time and money, I would suggest you to explore world of different types of photography first. Make your mind and discuss with your friend or something. Then proceed with your purchase.

My setup now is 17-50f2.8, 85f1.8 and 55-250. I used these 3 often when I shoot almost every weekend.

that looks like a great setup
I was thinking of the following setup for my experimentation stage.

18-55 kit lens which I already have, the 50 f1.8 the 55-250 which are both pretty well priced and decent lenses from what I have read.

I will probably go ahead and get the 55-250mm rather then the tamron 18-270 which seems not nicely enough priced for an experiment into the longer end of the range.

Really appreciate your help.

Not really,

I guess im just very excited about all the possibilities and everything is pretty much experimental right now so i am interested in cheapest alternatives for everything so I can figure out what I really like taking photos of. so a close up filter seems like a pretty good idea to start off some macro with thanks for that.

Yes Raynox DCR 250 is a good investment. The only disadvantage is you have to go very near to the object you want to shoot. The price for the Raynox is about $120.

To save you more time and money, get either the Canon 50 1.4 or sigma 50 1.4.

I'm a full time user of 50 1.8 before. Light lens to carry, but soft at wide open 50 1.8, mist everytime stop down to f2.8. Focusing on the 50 1.8 was horrible as it hunt and hunt especially at night. Manual focus ring is small. That's why I bought a tamron 17-50 f2.8.

Bokeh wise, 85 1.8 is more creamier, with USM which have a bigger focus barrier and a full time manual focus function. Focus is lightning fast, and it's a good lens for F1. 85 1.2 or 135 2.0 is better.

i wouldnt advice the canon 50 1.4, the micro-usm has a really bad design flaw and it might die even before 1 year :O if u want a 50 1.4, u probably wanna consider the sigma one. u can also try sigma 30 1.4 if 50mm isnt suitable for you.

i heard the 85 1.2 is even slower than the 85 f1.8. might not be such a good sports lens

yes you are right, the f1.2 is slower. the main feature for the f1.2 is usually use to capture still moments like portraits.

my setup next month will be

- 16-35 f2.8 L
- 85 f1.2 L
- 70-200 f2.8 L

B+W, hoya HD Pro, depends on your budget. no point attaching lousy filter to good lens, and i suspect u r using ef-s 17-55 right? that is one good lens, better get good filter like the B+W, protection + light transmission are great

third party and first party hoods have very little difference, even the material used feel the same.. it will probably only affect the resale price?

Is this really a 60D user thread? Where are the photos? After 46 pages, apart from the few by nightpiper, I am still waiting for one good and illustrative photo to convince me to buy a 60D. Are you guys keeping your 60D or what?

Hey guys Dec i am going for a 9days trip to the whole cambodia. It is my 1st trip there so what recommanded area is good to take photos. Alot of frens tell me that the sunrise / sunset there are great.. so anyone have been there share some area with me..

i've been using the tamron 28-75 for sometime now. Love that lens to bits but then now i need to shoot indoors, i'm afraid the lens is not wide enough. I was thinking of getting the tamron 17-50. I tried a copy but personally i feel, it doesn perform as well as my 28-75. My 28-75 is on my 550d most of the time ever since i got it. Now, im thinking should i just get a 10-22 instead to compliment my 28-75 instead of getting the 17-50. Any 550 bros here had similar dilemma, any comments or suggsstions? thanx.

It will depends on ur need bro.. 10-22mm is an Ultra Wide Angle lens.. Wow .. So wide.. :) i rented it before.. But for me UWA lens is only use for landscape, and 17-50mm is for Wideangle(not ultra) and walk-about lens.. choosing 17-50mm will give u flexibility without change ur lens and f2.8 constantly if needed in all situation(including low-light) and in case u need Wideangle, 17mm also wide enough better than 28mm, try the 18mm lens kit if you have..
but if you also like landscape photography, get 10-22mm .. But if u think you dont really like or rarely to shoot landscape, get 17-50mm, even 17mm also categorized as Wide angle lens too..

I find at 2.8, the image on my 28-75 is more usable than the 17-50 but at 4.0 they are abt as sharp. Could it just be the copy I tried? I dun think I'll need wide often but when I do need, even my 18-200 doesn feel like its wide enough. Price is defintely a factor to consider but if the resulting image makes up for it then it'll be money worth spending.

Hi everybody, new 550D user reporting in.
I want to get a battery grip for my new cam and since I like doing time lapse I'm think about getting one of the LCD grips with build-in interval meter. The problem is that they all seem to have a 99 frames limit.
Do anyone here know if it's possible to set the frame number to 0 on these battery grips to get unlimited shooting like you can on a time remote?

Hi everybody,

I've been using my 550D for a couple of months now, basically learning the ropes, and i must say, I really do find this camera to be an amazing piece of equipment.

However, I do have a problem that I hope you guys can help me out with. It seems that the 550D fares quite poorly in terms of auto-focusing whenever its used in areas with relatively low lighting. It can't seem to find a focus point, and the picture taken tends to turn out blurry from time to time.

I usually shoot on manual mode, and prefer to adjust the aperture and shutter speed to shoot in ambient lighting, hence the problem. I've tried using a 40D, and it's auto-focusing is MUCH BETTER than the 550D in these conditions.

So is it just my particular set that's having these problems, or do these problems apply to 550D in general? Any setting that I can tweak to deal with the problem?

Thanks in advance~ ;)
