1. Lens aperture is f/3.5-5.6. Which I didn't like under low light.

2. I don't need the range. I found out that I often use 18mm for landscape, 35mm, 50mm and 85mm for portraits. But I prefer f/2.8 lenses.

3. Thus I wanna get a 17-50 2.8, which gives me 17mm for landscape, 35mm and 50mm for portraits. And 85mm prime to cover up my range.

I see, since you are a user of this lens, may i know if this is a good lens for a beginner like me who have never used a dslr before. My preference for now at least would be to have a general do-it-all lens that can be attached to my camera all the time and to capture some decently nice photos. Please advise, thanks.
:)

Hello all, I am new here and I am considering on getting a canon D550 however I have some questions regarding this very Dslr.
Due to a budget constraint and being an entirely newcomer to photography, I am thinking of getting the Kit I.
However, I have also read comments about getting a 55mm - 200mm lens for the camera.
Can anyone enlighten me about this matter? Thanks alot! :)

think about it. if you often need to take close up, then you'll require a telephoto lens, there are others out there more expensive, depending on your budget.

Don't take whatever Canon gives for the kit lens..

Trust me, user of 3.5-5.6 lenses.. very disappointing..

Get lenses like f/2.8 ..

I would recommend you a Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM. :thumbsup::thumbsup:

I have yet to buy my dslr yet, thats why i'm gathering more information here at the forum, so you recommended me this Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM, how much is this lens? It seems like quite expensive right if i'm not wrong. Actually i was thinking either to get a 550d kit2 or a 550d body + tamron 17-55 f2.8 (similar to your recommended lens?) if i'm not wrong the price should be similar for my 2 choices.

Hi guys,

can someone recommend a reasonable remote control for 550d.
Just require one which will allow landscape photography and self couple portrait.

Thank you

I have read how great is the 17-55 lens. Need go seek your guidance. do I still need to buy a flash to support under low light condition? I am concerned that under low light say arestaurant..17-55 could not perform on a fast moving action

17-55 is going at about $1500 brand new and $1300 for 2nd hand... so you really feel you need something so expensive and will use it well to justify the price, then go ahead..

if not its like buying an expensive car but you cycle to work and around everyday.. only once inawhile drive..

it depends on what and the ambient lighting.. also you can increase ur iso for places where you don't flash.. with iso 1600 on my 500d and a 17-55 i can shoot without problem at night while riding the singapore flyer..

Get RC-6

agreed with odyssey...i am using Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 non vC too. Definitely better than the kit lens plus its so much solid feel. Allows me more light due to F2.8 and thus have a better shot. I am using 85mm F1.8 usm now, its kinda tight, but i am starting to get used to the focal length of shoot. I guess i just go get the 50 f1.8 cheapo lens as a supplementary lens will do then. Used to be using Samsung NX10 complete series, ended up i find i don't really use the 50-200 lens much at all. Portrait and wide angle shoot end up more like what i use actually......

guess the next lens besides 50 f1.8 would be the wide angle lens...

BTW, I like the creamy bokeh effects of 85mm f1.8 very much, really a very goo portrait lens

Thanks..any slow focusing / non-focus problem under dark conditions?

Yes, focusing haunts in low light

Most lenses hunt for focus in low light, especially when there is low contrast in the scene. But from the reviews i read the canon 17-55 USM is very very fast in AF even in low light condition where u probably will be using it most...

Thanks. I wonder 15-85mm have the same issue..
most probably.

Hi there, you can consider a generic one. I just got 1 from Artworkfoto yesterday for $12 and it works very well. Great service from them too! I like that it can also control Pentax and Nikon cameras also in case you jump ship. The Canon RC-6 cost $28 from SLRR. Up to you which one you get.

Hi there, am using the 17-55mm. Great lens with superb IQ and good low light performance also. However I think in restaurant, a flash is still essential to "stop action". Unless your subject don't move which is not possible.

I agree with you. 17-55mm is very fast AF. However you must make sure you focus on a contrasty area. Else it will hunt too. Machiam like focusing on a piece of white wall and it just cannot lock on. Provide a bit of contrast and it lock on super fast.

Thanks. I wonder 15-85mm have the same issue..
most probably.

15-85mm is a great lens too! For daylight usage is great and I feel that the IQ is comparable to the 17-55mm. The bad thing is that in low light condition its bad. Same situation I compared between 17-55mm and 15-85mm, the latter consistently used ISO 6400 whereas 17-55mm uses ISO 1600 and max 3200. Make a lot of difference in terms of the noise level. However if you use a flash, shouldn't be a problem. I like the range of the 15-85mm and its IQ. If you pair it with a flash in low light shouldn't be a problem. 17-55mm is more versatile in low light because you can choose not to use a flash. So up to you which is more important. ;)

Great info to share. Any good lens under low light..other than the 17-55?
