Hi Everyone!~

1 more 550D User here!~ :D

sorry if this sounds stupid. but i would like to know , what exactly defines a wide angle lens? is it the wider aperture, the wider angle it gets hence called wide angle?or is it about the focal length?

i have seen liked 50mm, f 1.4. and then from sigma, 17-70mm f 2.8 - (forgot) . so its the length or is it the aperture that made it wide angle?

newbie in photography.and a 550D user. hope you guys wont mind me asking like that caused i really wanna learn :)

The focal length defines the type of angle wide angle lens. Widest for APS-C cameras is the new sigma 8-16mm. For your cam from Canon, it will be the 10-22mm f3.5-4.5. Which will be equivalent to 16-35.mm due to the crop sensor of 1.6x.

Check it out here for Canon lenses

The "f" defines how "fast" it is. The lower/smaller the f stop the the faster/wider it is. So lenses with lower f number would cost more..

so am i right to say the shorter the wider the angle it gives? instead of just looking at the aperture, i should look at the focal length instead when considering ?^^

today i was at sim lim, checking the price of sigma 17-70mm lens. after getting quoted, bally photo tried hard sell me their steinser conversion lens. they show me how they put it onto the 18-55mm lens of a canon dslr, and then say it can do macro + wide angle.

anyway im not very sure why many say conversion lens is not good. mind sharing why?

Hi compgen,

Where u got ur Phottix BP-550D ?? hw is it?? I thinking of getting 1 also...

I got the phottix grip with 2 batteries from eBay for about S$105. So far so good. Nice using it, no complain.

Had write a "help" on getting Phottix Grip from eBay here. :)

Try putting a pair of glasses for your good pair of eyes, u will know why.:bsmilie:

Sim lim is a scary place for ppl who are new. They can be very convincing to get ppl to buy stuff that are inferior or they dun need. Go try funan, its a little better but still do ur homework before u go. And yea conversion is nt good likes soons said.

The smaller the first set of digits is how wide the lens able to shoot. Got for the low 10s like starting from 10mm to 12mm. You can't adjust the angle for a 12mm to be like a 10mm with a slower f stop, you can use breathing holding technique or use a tripod a for slower f-stop 10mm lenses (ie f4). But some people prefer to have a faster f stop which has a fix aperture f2.8, like the Tokina 11-16mm f 2.8 just sacrificing the +1mm which produce nicer Bokeh).

17mm is not consider wide enough for a APS-C sensor. 550D has a crop sensor so it will be magnified(dunno is the right term to say) to 27.2mm.

Look at the second and third table in the below link.

Bro Soons got a good metaphor, the IQ is not up to standard as true UWA lense. If got friend going HK, ask him to help you buy, much cheaper than SG. There is a guide on Hong Kong threads around Club Snap.

A good review on some of the available APS-C UWA lenses.

Don't know. Think killerslayer92 mentioned before that looking from the design and position of the screw point, it should be the same.

Anyway up to you to decide. But there isn't much different in price btw Phottix and other 3rd parties (in eBay), so why not just get Phottix?

I got the other brand from eBay and I tried the original BG before. The scroll wheel of mine feels semi loose. Not as sturdy as you scoll on your Canon scroll wheel.
I have not try the Phottix before so i can't give a comparison to this. Maybe Bro Compgen can share how the scroll wheel feels like as compare to our 550D's scroll wheel.

For the rest of buttons, it pretty decent.

I thought mine was suppose to be Meike but it came to be Jenis... I did asked them ebay - NAlink before buying from them but they can't give me a definite answer on what brand of BG they are selling...

Most other 3rd parties also got a "free" gift of the Apeture wired remote.

If I got a 2nd chance i would pay abit more to get the (Provided that i know that the Phottix scroll wheel is firmer) Phottix.

But if i need a wired remote too, i would get the other 3rd party BG as it is still usable. I was just greedy with the lure of the free wired remote which i already had a wireless/wired remote....

Given a choice,

hey bro.
thanks for that.

i got most of you idea , except for "You can't adjust the angle for a 12mm to be like a 10mm with a slower f stop, you can use breathing holding technique or use a tripod a for slower f-stop 10mm lenses (ie f4). But some people prefer to have a faster f stop which has a fix aperture f2.8, like the Tokina 11-16mm f 2.8 just sacrificing the +1mm which produce nicer Bokeh)"

do you mind explaining a little bit more? i do know what is bokeh but erm the earlier few sentences, i somehow need further explaination. sorry for the trouble

also , i have seen canon 50mm F1.4, and 85mm F1.8. im not sure if im right, but from the notion, it seems liked the shorter the distance, the wider aperture i can go.

so am i right to say that if im looking at wide angle lens, i should look for one w/ a shorter focal length , and a smaller number (1.4,1.8 rather than 3.5-5.6) too? that would be a great way to go?

Can Aomekne pls enlighten me. I am looking for a off shoe cable for external flash but don't seem to be able to find a 3th party off shoe cable.
In the first place did I even get the proper name for the cable. Can someone please advise. Thank you
