First DSLR! I got the 550d with the 18-55 kit lens camera a few weeks ago and I am absolutely loving it but now I am itching to get more out of it. I am still exploring the kind of pictures that I do want to take so I am actually thinking of getting cheap options to figure out what kind of photography I like doing
definitely getting a 50mm 1.8.
I do want to explore the option of longer zooms
option 1) get a tamron 18-270. for holiday walk arounds to cover all ranges with one lens
option 2) get the canon 55-250mm. cheaper option but means i have to carry and change between 3 light lenses and not really something fun to do when you are on holiday.
option 3) feel free to give me another option.
also what is a good starting macro lens?
really looking forward to your opinions
replace your 18-55 with 17-50 tamron non-vc

Thanks! Wow calibration cost $80? How long it takes? Must bring camera along?
18-135 is not a macro lens, you might as well get a dedicated macro lens (EF 100mm f2.8 Macro USM)
I recommend MC UV filter (67mm), But if you put EW-73B Lens Hood then thre's no need for the UV filter because the hood can also protect your lens.
are there any dedicated macro lens that are more cost friendly?

Pardon me for my English. I started photography 2 months ago and I just bought the Tamron 17-50mm on Monday. The difference between this two lens is 1mm wider range for the Tamron and 5mm longer range for the kit lens. However the Tamron have fixed f/2.8 (Aperture) while the kit lens don't have. You can also use the Tamron f/2.8 for portraits for the creamy bokeh effects. If you have extra cash to spare you should buy the Canon 50mm f/1.8 because it cost about $150 and have sharper image for portraits.
Tomorrow I will be going to chinatown with my friends after school and if possible i will share some pictures.
Kit Lens Advantage
Light
IQ is reasonable
Image Stableliser (Good for shaky hands)
Seldom hunt for focus
Focusing speed is faster to me
Tamron Advantage
f/2.8
IQ is sharp
Can use for Portraits too.
Low light condition is better.
However you should go out and take more photos and you will know what you really want. Usually people buy the Tamron lens to replace the Kit Lens.
I'm a noob too so please pardon me for any mistakes.
Have you done your research on macro lenses ?
It's okay, let me list them down foe the common ones.
Canon EF100mm f/2.8 Macro
Popular among macro shooter
Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8
Cheaper alternative to 100mm f/2.8
Tamron 90mm f/2.8
Around the price of 500-600 odd I guess
For cheapest alternative, get a Hoya Close Up filter on your lens so you can go nearer or Raynox stuffs.
Not really,
I guess im just very excited about all the possibilities and everything is pretty much experimental right now so i am interested in cheapest alternatives for everything so I can figure out what I really like taking photos of. so a close up filter seems like a pretty good idea to start off some macro with thanks for that.
The problem for most of us here is that when we started out shooting, we don't know what we like to shoot, thus for some, they buy and buy different types of lenses.
Some may have 6-7 lenses but only use 2 the most often.
To save time and money, I would suggest you to explore world of different types of photography first. Make your mind and discuss with your friend or something. Then proceed with your purchase.
My setup now is 17-50f2.8, 85f1.8 and 55-250. I used these 3 often when I shoot almost every weekend.
