hey do u all get hotshoe cover? is it a necessity ?

Not really. For canons, if you place the cover in the slot, the pop-up flash will not work. There is a clip mechanism that will make it think an external flash is attached. Just keep it clean and dry.

However, you can buy those generic shoe covers for $3 (I think) or make one from whatever part that works. There is a thread in the forum that shows you how to make one for yourself if want. Just do a search on it.

I just wandering if anyone here using the Kit II len 18-200mm experience barrel distortion on the wide angle (18mm). dpreview show barrel distortion of 3.4% and their samples show very obvious distortion (buildings curving in etc). However they shot using 50D body, so just wandering if it is the effect on the 500D. Thanks

Alot of lens at 18mm will have some barrel distortion, that includes sigma 18-200, tamron 18-270.

You will shock to know than even canon kit lens 18-55 will have some barrel distortion.

Personally i am using 500D with 18-200mm, so far no complain, except for the weight. I have not try taking building with straight lines, so cannot comments on the barrel distortion. From reviews, its say that barrel distortion is noticeable at 18mm, but at 24mm onwards is quite ok.

I almost got myself a 18-200mm, and realised that right now i don't need that range.
Hence i got myself a tamron 17-50mm. so far so good. no distortion.

tamron 17-50mm is a very good lens, how much you bought?

actually it also have some barrel distortion at 2.5%, but less significant.

i trade-in my 18-55 IS to my friend, top up 180bucks.
He's changing to nikon, then 18-55 IS is either for his cousin or for his dad.

We both know that 18-55 IS + $180 is still to cheap for a tamron 17-50 non-VC (Less than 1 year old).
But well, he's just doing to good deed to me ;p

I did give him a treat

Hows the Tammy? I’m thinking of getting that or saving up for a 17-55mm. Can you get used to the reverse turning for the zoom? I understand its in the opposite direction of canon’s.

Also, i need to check, did all your 500Ds come with the hotshoe cover? Mine did not

Bro fyi most cam do not come with hotshoe cover. Its consider as an accessoriess so it ur additional purchase.

Ya, the zooming was no issue to me.
In fact, i like the feel over my 18-55 kit lens.

Mine doesn't comes with a hot shoe cover.

I'm currently using a hotshoe cover, the good thing is to cover the hotshoe from dust or any unwanted stuff, but the bad thing is that the pop up flash would not come up when u have the hotshoe cover on.

I think the 18-200mm is more then enough for your holiday trip

The 500D does not come with any hotshoe cover, but u can purchase either online from ebay for perhaps few $ only.
