My personal take is that the 58/1.4 needs some time getting used to, having used it on the D800. On the Df, I think focusing errors would be less obvious bah.
But once that's out of the way, you get to do some really dreamy portraits.

50mm siao kia. I almost bought an Ai'd 50mm f/2 Nikkor-H (different optical formula from the Nikkor-S) but for the then coming AFS 50mm f/1.8G SE with the Df kit. Yes deep deep addict

:embrass:Sad to say my work takes up so much time that I have almost effectively degenerated into a "collector", except for brief periods when I have a weekend break while in some far flung places, or during my annual or semi-annual diving vacations.
My favourite right now is the f/1.2 shot at either f/1.2 or f/2. In focus part is sharp but not clinically sharp, but the OOF parts go into an almost dreamy look, most surreal! Difficult to nail focus, but once I get it the effects are astounding. I kena poisoned deep deep by the MF lens thread...
The Ai 50mm f/2 is astoundingly sharp at f/8, maybe all lenses are so.
The AFD f/1.4 (MIJ - from a long time ago) is basically occupying cabinet space... I am honestly disappointed with the AFS 50mm f/1.4G, but have not given it too much workout... too many toys.
The non-Ai lenses (Nikkor-S 5cm f/2 and Nikkor-S 50mm f/1.4) had only seen actions in D60 so can't state too much. With the Df these lenses will get a spin.
When I can find the time, I will do a 3-lens travel with Nikkor-H 28mm f/3.5 (Ai'd), Nikkor-S 5cm f/2 and Nikkor-P 10.5cm f/2.5 with the Df. Now that is retro!

So glad I waited before responding. Now I know what you guys think "normal lens" meant. Boy it shows my age. But maybe you are pulling my legs, latter scenario likely with at least the last response, if not the last 2.
Normal lens is another name for standard lens, it does not confer any connotation with respect to branded, non-branded, famous, not famous. Normal or standard lens have focal length roughly equal to the diagonal of the sensor (film), so for FX it is 43mm. But back in the pre-computer days it was easier to design fast lenses that is a little longer, so you will see the first Nikon F mount normal lens with f/1.4 was 58mm, and the first normal lens with f/1.2 was 55mm. Today we generally accept for FX anything from 40mm to 58mm as normal lens (OK, standard lens).
I have 7 standard or normal lens. And jeff7id is right, unless it is special there is no room in my cabinet for another normal lens. Voiglander is probably not special enough :sweat: :kok: (ok, so it is coming out, but that is another story, just so you know, Cosina lenses back then were among the worst lenses available - how many of you will try the AiS Nikkor 35-70mm f/3.5-4.5 bundled with FM10, made by Cosina?). The AFS 58mm f/1.4G might be, but too ex le!

Actually both were taken with bounced flash (testing out the SB-300 at the same time). I was trying to see how sharp the lens is wide opened at f/1.4 and it was already evening.
I have had good experience with the M-mount Voigtlander 50mm Nokton f/1.5 and I wanted to see if the 58mm Nokton performs similarly like in this pic by the former lens.
1/158s, f/1.5, 50mm, ISO 200
Think I need to try again under better / similar lighting conditions.

Yes. Although the 58mm focal length is more suitable for this kind of photography, ie pet portraits, compared to 40mm, the super shallow DOF at full frame is a killer at f/1.4. Differences in lighting conditions also made the 40mm shot looked much better.
