Actually before owning Df, I was D800 user. No regret at all for getting the Nikon Df.

No doubt Df is a good cam. I'm here not to judge the Df is expensive or not, just read my analysis below of both cameras D700 & Df then decide for yourself.
The points listed below are my personal opinions/views and compared via the listed specification in the manual.

Back in 2009 when D700 was introduced, price was $3350(Cash) when I got mine. No freebies...
D700 adv:
FX
12Mp D3 sensor (but they are still different in picture quality in someways where D3 is better IMO)
Better auto WB than D3
1/8000th sec
AF all Pts at F5.6
5Fps/8fps(with grip but can use bracketing to make it 8fps without grip)
Buffer is 20Raw for 14bit lossless compressed
ISO Gd till 5000
Pop up flash for CLS
Battery life CIPA ~1000shots
Battery cap 1500mAh
Optional battery grip MB-D10
Life view
Made In Japan

Dis Adv:
12MP (where other camp already pushing >20MP)
No video recording (understandable in 2009)
Louder shutter sounds (more solid for olden days)
Weight slightly over 1kg

Df in 2013 end. (4yrs later)
Price ~$3300(Credit card) + freebies
Adv:
Retro design
Smaller & lighter
16MP D4 sensor
ISO Gd till 25k and usable till 100k(screen viewing)
AF centre 7 Pts at F8
5.5Fps
Buffer is 29Raw for 14bit lossless compressed
Battery life CIPA: ~1400shots
Battery cap 1230mAh
Softer shutter/mirror sound with Quiet mode
Life view (as expected)
Made In Japan
Weight almost 800grams

Dis Adv:
1/4000th sec
No video recording (In year 2013 cameras released, seriously!!!)
No pop up flash
CLS need a Nikon flash or SU800
No optional battery grip (doesn't matter to me as I want my carry camera light)

Other than improvements for AF & Sensor are necessary, that's all for my round up.
For those who are still considering Df, hope this points can help you.

Merry Xmas to all Nikon Users & other readers here!

I usually like his reviews but this time round, he reviewed the Df just like the way dpreview did theirs. They had already prejudged the Df negatively in their preview and then went on to trash it in their full review as if they would lose face if they ate their words and gave it a great review now. Ming Thien also wrote that he did not like the Df in his preview and followed it through in his full review.

I don't know what kind of hands he has got but I have big hands with long fingers and mine certainly didn't cramp up like his did after half an hour of handling the Df to the extent that he could not produce a single shot to post in his review. Go shoot a cat for heaven sake. I did and survived to post about it. In fact I find it easier to hold and handle than my D800E. So there ! :what:

Thanks bro for your pointers.....

Yap, I waited for quite a while before getting the d700.... when it finally drop below 3k I think.... good cam, just dont like the weight.... kekekekeke....

Merry Christmas to all.

There are a lot of people who are naysayers and like to bash new camera, but cannot produce a single shot to post in his/her review.

Not like other reviewers, I like Steve Huff. He is an Olympus guy and his favorite camera is E-M1 plus Voigtlander lenses, but he is quite fair.

"At the end of the day, I do NOT have a DSLR nor a way to shoot some of those cool old Nikon lenses. I ended up picking up the silver kit for those times I want to kick it retro style with an AF fast 50. No matter what the naysayers tell you, this camera does feel great to take out and shoot, and one that inspires is one that will be used. There is nothing from Canon that excites me..Sony DSLRS are not to my liking to where I would buy one…Pentax kicks some bootie but I love the design, feel, speed and look of the Df. I can have any DSLR or camera that I want and for me, the Df wins it. If I designed a DSLR for my own use it would be 75% Df and 0% Canon 5D. Enough said.

PS – To those who are saying it is too thick..remember, it is a DSLR. The thickness can not be changed with a Nikon or Canon DSLR that accepts the Nikon or Canon DSLR lenses. This thickness HAS to be maintained in order for the lenses to work. So you will never see a Nikon or Canon DSLR that is thin unless they invent a new lens mount. But for size, this is about as good as it gets for full frame DSLR. "

IF I buy DF, THIS will be my first FX

I've been using D300s for 4yrs now. And never have I taken movies with it.
it has 1/8000 of shutter speed
Do you think shutter speed on DF which is 1/4000 is sufficient?

check your exif on photos taken with lightroom, see how many photos are taken faster than 1/4000th sec.
from there then you can evaluate if 1/4000th is enough for you.

Please do not put IF... just put for 1/4000th sec on DF is it sufficient?

I'd like faster myself with my glass.... that said use a good ND / or ND GRAD filter can also help.

No big deal for a non sports shooter.

Will see what Nikon is up to in FEB 2014 before I decide to buy my DF. ;)

I am in the same situation. I have been a dedicated DX user, not because I am particularly in love with DX, but that FX came at a time when I left commercial photography. No income to pay itself, and DX continues to work well enough for me.

When the Df first appeared, I thought, hey, will think be the cheap D4? Despite the cheers over in this thread, the Df isn't what I want in a camera. So it is back to my old D7000 (I sold my D300s in anticipation of the D800... With the issues then and the large file size, I bought a D7000 instead).

Like you, Im on the same boat. I like DX of its 'reach' and with good settings, it can take stunning pictures. I do take weddings (not always) and my favorite lens would be tokina 11-16mm.
Some peeps said that this lens not suited for portraits cause of image distortions. I don't know. I just like this lens.
Like the rest, Im waiting for D400. In vain eventually. But still, Im waiting.
And when D800 arrives, 36mp detail photo with huge, huge data size. I almost bought it 3 months ago. But i decided to 'lets wait awhile'
Now DF ... I'm so impress with the ISO. And the best part, it takes only pictures, Doesn't film. There are some minor disadvantages though. But I think I can live with it.
Still! I don't know. Lets just wait 2014. Just like Dfive had said.

BTW. Love your blog and your pictures too ... keep it up :)

D800 raw files were huge but I still could live with it. But the PSD created from D800 RAW files were mammoth and I could not take it anymore !!
Df is the perfect solution for me. I hope the same for you. :)

Only changed that crappy cheapo-looking strap that came with the camera and added a soft release. Nikon should have included a better original strap at the price they changed for the Df. It's absolutely the worst original strap that I have come across for any camera I owned.

Now waiting for Gariz to come out with a half-case for the Df. They said that they are currently working on the design. :)
