In terms of price definitely 1.8, but it might be able to reach the full potential of 21mp camera (dun quote me, what i read off the web) I wanted to keep my setup as "L" as possible so I went for the 35L instead of 50s. Thats jus me thou

35L & 50L price not much different....

i am very happy with 24-105 IS, 17-40 is almost needed cos 24 still not wide enough. since you are only a hobbist, dont need to spend on 16-35f2.8 II + 24-70 f2.8, that would be my few months salaries...

Not sure where you read those negative feedbacks but personally I find the 24-105 to be a very good general purpose lens, albeit the f/4 which will pose some problems in low light environment. Other than that I really can't think of anything 'negative' about it. :dunno:

I guess it all boils down to personal preference. 24 is not that bad on FF, but of course the 17-40 will come in handy if you shoot a lot of landscape
