I went to CSC at Harbourfront this afternoon to replace the black hotshoe plate with a silver one because the black paint has chipped off. They told me that it would take 1 hour and 15 minutes and cost $30 + GST. I remember another Clubsnapper getting theirs done for $21 a few months ago but I felt that a $9 difference wasn't a show stopper, so I went ahead with it.
I came back to CSC to pick up my camera. I was surprised to see a brand new "black" hotshoe plate on my camera. I had asked for a silver one and told the clerk that I would not have done it if I knew that they would only replace it with a another black plate since the same problem would result over time. He took the camera and went back to the technician and asked if he could replace it with a silver hotshoe plate. The technician then told him that he could not, because "Japan" could not guarantee that a silver hotshoe plate would be compatible on the Canon 5D classic. The silver hotshoe plate is meant for the Canon 5D Mark II.
I insisted that others had this procedure done on their Canon 5D MkI without incident (I remember reading about it in earlier posts). The technician then switched the plate within 30 seconds!... literally. I was thinking, WOW!... $30 for 30 seconds of work!... that's $1 per second! Anyway, I was relieved that he actually did it but I wanted to test it with a flash before I left CSC. They gave me a 580 Mk I to test with and there was no problem. Now after saying all this, I have no complaint with CSC over this incident. In fact, I appreciate their willingness to inform me of the pros and cons of my initial request. The fact that it cost $30 for 30 seconds of work is another matter but I'm not going to quibble about $30.
My question is... has anyone had this procedure done to their Canon 5D MkI and had any problems? Even if you haven't had problems please let me know so that I can be assured that this isn't going to cause problems in the future.

wonder if got difference meh, i highly doubt so.
not sure why you had to go through all that, but i had it changed at no hassle at all.

Hi guys i need your advice... I used to shoot with my 50d with 24-70mm and gave up the hobby for a year already. Now i wanna return for shoots. Would you recommend a a Olympus EP3 with Leica lens or canon 5d classic with 24mm 1.4 prime?

I just finished my trip to Hong Kong. I found a great place in Mong Kok called Sim City. I used to shop there when I lived in Hong Kong but mostly for computer related stuff.
There are a lot of great camera stores that sell used equipment at Sim City. I went to look for a 2nd hand BG-E4 Battery Grip for my 5D since I could not find one in Singapore. Many of the stores stocked them but prices ranged from HK$800 to HK$1200. Bargaining is a MUST. I managed to get one for only HK$600 (that's about S$95!) in great condition with battery pack included (but not the original box).
I've been using the battery grip for the last few days and it works flawlessly! Only problem is that I may have to buy a bigger bag.

I have the same thought too, so tempted to buy another set.
Anyway, I think I will hold on to mine for as long as Canon continue to service them. There's just something magical about the 5D, which I do not know how to describe in words....

I know that several will disagree with me on this, but I would advise you to get a 7D. I own both the 7D and 5D and I am of the opinion that the IQ between the two cameras is negligible. This question comes up quite often with people weighing on both sides. Here are the reasons for my opinion:
1. The difference in IQ between the two cameras is imperceptible.
2. More cropping capability with the 7D (18mp vs. 12.9mp)
3. The combination of the 7D + 17-55mm lens is no better, no worse than the combination of 5D + 24-70mm lens or 5D + 24-105mm lens.
4. The 7D has a much better LCD.
5. The 7D has a bigger view finder.
6. The 7D has a far superior Auto-Focus system.
7. The 7D has an electronic leveling system.
8. The 7D has automatic sensor cleaning.
9. The 7D has built in remote flash capabilities.
10. The 7D has a built in flash (good for fill flash).
As much as I love my 5D and its magic, the 7D is a very capable and enjoyable camera.

I agree with this - if you have only one camera, 7D is a more versatile option. If you’ve already got a 5D2 and looking for a backup then 5D can be an option, so that you have equal focal length across your lenses.

It's good to have both but if one were to choose only one, then depends one's shooting style. Like me, strictly an old legacy lens guy, I will go for one that is more adaptable. Is the 7D's VF really larger than the FF VF in absolute size?
There's rumor of a new FF that's going to slot in just below the 5D2/3, lower mp, hopefully 18 or 21. This may be worth waiting for.
