Wow! $120 is insane price!

woah. suddenly relive the thread. hee hee.

anyway, i also got a question in mind: it is a choice between two super teles.

Which one to get? Tokina 80-400, or Minolta 500mm reflex?

Tokina 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 or Minolta 500mm reflex F8. Get the tokina its a faster lens. The following are problems with a mirror lens:

1. no aperture so it's not possible to control the depth-of-field.
2. the mirror reflections eat contrast
3. the overall sharpness is usually quite mediocre
4. the secondary mirror produces an odd effect doughnut-like effect on the out-of-focus high-lights.

But 2 advantages, like light weight and compactness for this 500mm focal length can almost counter all the disadvantage.

For KM 500mm mirror lens, the best mirror lens in DSLR system
1. usually not a big issue at this length.
2. post processing to increase the contrast
3. I don't know about other, but the sample I see from this lens is sharp, no CA also.
4. This is an issue indeed, some feed back that if you carefully choose the no-high light background, the donut won't show.

those who love to eat donut will love the 500mm f8 mirror... :bsmilie:

hmm........so all would recommend the 80-400? and is its focusing speed faster than the mirror?

The 500mm/8 is a classic... as zcf pointed out, only Minolta has this AF lens... if you can get it on the cheap, excellent... I am a sucker for fun lens...

80-400 if you are going for practicality...

2. AF speed

how do the two compare?

thanks!

As of 1 July 2006, I am finally a proud owner of a 7D!!!!!!:D :D :D :D
would like to thank l_n_h for willing to sell his 7D at such a low price to me with a few weeks of warrnty to spare.

however, after using to camera, i think i might be using the warrnty soon, here's a few questions i want to ask:

1. After taking some shots, i noticed that there are some(2 i think) blue dots appearing in my photos. they look like bright pixels to me and not dust. seller told me that 7D will do pixel mapping every starting of the month and told me that it will be ok. but still, isn't pixel mapping solving the problem from the surface but not from the root?

2. i noticed that the AS is quite erractic. in some shots, the AS makes no sound, but other times, it makes this consideribly loud grinding sound. normal, or abnormal?

Any lobang of 7D wanted to get 1 from day 1 but the price to x. I am using the Dynax 7
and got lots of lens and 5600 and 5400 flash light. I got my 5600 flash light at cash converter at $90. Can any 1 help mi to get a 7d.. thanks

Picture quality the Tokina wins. I not sure on the auto focus speed. Anyway the Tokina is a zoom lens and the mirror lens is a fix lens and no aperture control.

I've no experience with the 500mm Cat (tried to buy thru' ebay, but always loss bid), but I did use the 80-400mm (first gen) extensively and loved it! 80-300mm is really sharp. 400mm also very sharp. requires stopping down to f8. the AF performance is amazing - much faster and precise than the Minolta 100-400 APO (which I also owned).

Only reason why I sold it is because I got hold of the Tokina AT-X 400mm prime which I love even more :bsmilie:
