But 2 advantages, like light weight and compactness for this 500mm focal length can almost counter all the disadvantage.Tokina 80-400mm F4.5-5.6 or Minolta 500mm reflex F8. Get the tokina its a faster lens. The following are problems with a mirror lens:
1. no aperture so it's not possible to control the depth-of-field.
2. the mirror reflections eat contrast
3. the overall sharpness is usually quite mediocre
4. the secondary mirror produces an odd effect doughnut-like effect on the out-of-focus high-lights.
But 2 advantages, like light weight and compactness for this 500mm focal length can almost counter all the disadvantage.
For KM 500mm mirror lens, the best mirror lens in DSLR system
1. usually not a big issue at this length.
2. post processing to increase the contrast
3. I don't know about other, but the sample I see from this lens is sharp, no CA also.
4. This is an issue indeed, some feed back that if you carefully choose the no-high light background, the donut won't show.
The 500mm/8 is a classic... as zcf pointed out, only Minolta has this AF lens... if you can get it on the cheap, excellent... I am a sucker for fun lens...
80-400 if you are going for practicality...
As of 1 July 2006, I am finally a proud owner of a 7D!!!!!!![]()

would like to thank l_n_h for willing to sell his 7D at such a low price to me with a few weeks of warrnty to spare.
however, after using to camera, i think i might be using the warrnty soon, here's a few questions i want to ask:
1. After taking some shots, i noticed that there are some(2 i think) blue dots appearing in my photos. they look like bright pixels to me and not dust. seller told me that 7D will do pixel mapping every starting of the month and told me that it will be ok. but still, isn't pixel mapping solving the problem from the surface but not from the root?
2. i noticed that the AS is quite erractic. in some shots, the AS makes no sound, but other times, it makes this consideribly loud grinding sound. normal, or abnormal?
