I think no one has any doubt that downloading of those anime is illegal. However, what Odex should have done is to fire a warning salvo to those downloaders before threatening to sue them. Many of these downloaders are young and underage, and may not have known the grave consequence of their act. They should have taken this opportunity to educate the offenders, and not just slapping them with a penalty.
This kind of tactics is just what makes it hard for the general public to swallow. It is liken to seeing strong adults beating up these seemingly defenseless youngsters, it is disgusting. This is bullying at its worst.
Why should they make the parents pay for something their children committed? Simply because the parents are the children's guardian? If this is so, then the children shouldn't be harshly penalised simply they are still young and may not know what they are doing, and hence they need guardians and guidance right? Thus, the 'punishment' that Odex bestowed upon these youngsters, in my opinion, is definitely too harsh and ill conceived.
Having the director of the company to proclaim in public forums that he is out to get them and gloat about it, truly speaks for the kind of ugly stuff this bloke is made up of. He needs to grow up himself first.
If my child is involved, I'll definitely fight tooth and nail with these bullies.
