Me feels that the problem with NS is not about the training but rather the screw way in which SAF is being run.
Military training (outfield exercise etc) are quite tame nowadays and I believe any able bodied male will be able to take it. In fact, I personally enjoyed the training. Not many people gets to ride on tank and fire live ammunition especially in a tightly regulated country in Singapore.
What I find sick about NS is the stupidities and the utter lack of common sense. In fact, in Army, you get to experience the finest Singapore culture - the kiasu-ism, the kiasi-ism. Not forgetting that there are tonnes of inflated egos officers though, there are those who deserve respect as well. How many times have we encounter a 2LT telling you to do one thing, only to be over-written by a LTA and then over-written further by a CPT? And eventually, kana F by the 2LT for not following his instructions? In a battlefield, chain of command have to be strictly followed. But when it comes to peace time management of the Army unit, really, I just feel it is pathetic.
I wouldn't say I enjoyed my NS days, except for the training in ROC (because its more realistic). But I have to agree that, NS allows me to see and experience all kinds of people at both extreme end - the ultra chow keng and the sensible/responsible.
