NS deferment possible due to upcoming vacation?

There is a directive that your ICT call up Notice Letter should be send out to you at least 6 months in advance, so then you can schedule your plans accordingly. Thus, think this might be your greatest trumph card that you can try to bang on hard, especially so if the SAF 100 Notice came to you less than 6 months in advance. You can explain that since it's less than 6 months notice, it had already disturpted your plan very badly, thus, it's only fare to you that they should defer your ICT, especially so when the holiday plan was already paid up.

If the SAF100 Notice did come to you more than 6 months in advance, then you still can try to write in to request, citing that due to 'overseas assignment'. You can try to ask your company's HR Dept to write a letter to help you to jusify your deferment.

My Bf next to me says if its less than 6 months, its properly a Low Key ICT (usually 3 months notice). You can ask for deferment with your unit CO and go through the appeal process with NSHRC and above if you get rejected first time round ;)

My advice to you would be to contact your OC which is most likely a NS man like you. Talk to him nicely telling him your problem and ask if he can help. Also ensure him that next incamp you turn up ( and make sure you keep that promise) he might let u off. Seriously once you are reservist, it is no longer all black and white, your officers know that you are working outside and as long as you can show that each time you come in for incamp, you perform well and not try to skive. Most of the time, some leeway is given. Once your OC informs the Chief Clerk for you, you are saved. Have seen it so many times in my unit with officers and men, last min got work assignment, family matters etc OC auto give them off from the reservist. However of course he expects them to be doubly on the ball the next reservist.

Oh thanks Bored Dad for the suggestion! I didn't know they have to issue 6months notice?! Come to think of it, mine was only 3 1/2 months.

Maybe I can make some noise. Well, the problem is, I haven't paid for the vacation but it was indeed planned to fall in the period. I wonder if they could turn things around on me. It's not easy for me and my friend to get the same leave period. Those guys in Army... wonder if they will accept such a reason. But I can try...

On your second point, isn't that lying? And don't think my HR will want to get into such hot soup!

But thanks again... Will work on the first one.
my unit served pre-SAF100 warning 12 months ahead... then few months after that.. SAF100 came..

anyway, there's always a 'make up' ICT.. so no worries.. just go for it

A couple of years back, I was called up for ICT when my daughter was only 4 months old, leaving my wife as the sole caregiver:angry:. I appealed to the "crabs" and "stars" for deferment but to no avail; instead, I was advised to report for ICT and work out a palatable schedule with my superior:angry::angry:. I did and was allowed to follow the usual office hours during a large part of my ICT:vhappy:.

Nowadays everything thru Internet liaoz. No more SAF100 notice oredi. :sweat:

Anyway it depends for them. It once took them as fast as just 3 days to approve my deferment to as long as 2wks and 24hrs BEFORE my ICT and I have to screw them thoroughly before they approved it, 1hr before working office hour end. :sweat:

Wow... What made them approve it finally and how you did it? U had a few deferments due to work?

Thanks to all who shared....

Anyway, I did finalyl receive the "new" SAF100. But no unit numer and person to contact. When I went to the website, there was no info at all. :thumbsd: there was literally no one from my unit I can speak to! :dunno:

I don't even know what sort of training it will be.. They just say report in uniform. Wa piangz...

Report in Uniform also.
Need to bring everything or not?

my 1st ICT. hehe...

.

I just bring and leave in the car. Officially you need, but most of the time you only need to bring the barang on the day before u go for exercise.

Report in Uniform also.

The 1st one was for an Surgical Procedure which was actually due on the very 1st day of my ICT which was arranged for by my specialist. I sent in all relevant documents 2wks (SOP for deferment cases) before ICT and waited for the longest time ever until on the last Friday just 2 days before my ICT, I called them up and asked for status of my application which they said that, "Sorry, still processing." crap.

I simply told them abt the operation and the lady said, "Oh, if its not approved u'll still have to return."

So I confirmed with them if I din report to camp but to the hospital instead for my operation, I'll be charged for AWOL and the lady said a firm "Yes. You will be charged under Section XXX, Chapter XXX. AWOL."

And I told her to call the MP, goto SGH Operating Theatre outside and wait for me at about 1pm or so on that day to arrest me as soon as I'm wheeled outta the OT and I'll be ready to report to CMPB or even bring me to MINDEF HQ to be formally charged. She said she'll get back to me soonest and within the hour she called me up and said my deferment had been approved.

Of cos, I ensured that I had a duplicate copy of everything throughout my hospital stay and waited for MP to come & arrest me. Nothing of that sort happened though.

It worked for me doesn't mean it will work for u! :sweat::sweat:

The talk of AWOL and all is just scaremongering by the admin staff. What really happens if you dont turn up for first day of ICT is that end of day 1, the Chief Clerk will print out a document with rank and name of personal who didnt report. Then either his friends, or someone staying around the same area will be asked to deliver the letter to his house informing him that he has Awol from reservist and he better get his butt into camp next day with a very good reason. No MPs arresting you on day 1 unless you are no 1 most marked man by CO.

From my 6 incamps of which 4 had such incidents of around 5 to 7 guys not reporting each time. The reasons are always similar, on mc and never inform or claim never recieve SAF 100. They always end up doing the reservist from day 2 onwards and of course they sometimes have bear the brunt of jokes by the officers... example "hey hey that guy.... the one who FORGET to come for reservist! Tomorrow don't forget to come for IPPT hah!"

Edited to restate some points:

I am not saying that one should awol rather that sometimes the admin staff just use scare tatics to reject one's perfectly legit applications. And many a time knowing how urgent the application is, they choose to sit on it and wait till the last min to tell you "sorry not approved"

Also do note, giving you deferments and etc are a privelege not an entitlement. So make sure you earn that privelage.

Heard from my bf relating this story of his recent ICT 2 weeks ago.

1 guy reported late on the first day, claim not to be aware of the SAF 100 (which was subsequent proven that he acknowledged via call). Never appear with FBO. Immediately asked for deferment during in-processing but was rejected. Disappear after in-processing and reported sick outside and got MC for 9 days. Was asked to come back to camp to report and endorse MC but ignored. MP was sent to arrest him on the last day of ICT after his MC was over. He was charged with the following initially and recommended 40 days DB by the JDO (OC):

* Reporting late for ICT
* Reporting without SBO, Full pack (FBO) with all items packed and according to Standing orders
* Malingering
* AWOL

He appealed JDO decision and was referred to the CO (SDO). CO reduced the charges and gave him 10 days DB.

Dont play play la. Some units are super on one ;)

This is called pushing your luck too far. As I mentioned, most units give grace but once you overstep it.... sorry.... and also the reporting without SBO and FBO.... most likely the being late incident and his attitude has pissed the officer off. His biggest mistake? Not coming back to endorse MC. The worse that can happen to him is that he gets a make up ICT for missing this one.... The refusing to come back to endorse MC was his death wish.

This one too much.
If dun want to go, do it all the way - that includes not even ACKNOWLEDGING SAF100.

There's a saying, "If Death Doesn't Seek You, A Man Shalt Not Seek Death on his own."
In this case, guess this hero's literally looking for it and is desperate for death. :bsmilie:

Silly guy... He got to only endorse his MC and he is freed from the ICT. Why push it further by not turning up at all?

But can tell he's probably the type really hates the Army a lot.

One thing is I must say he steady... How to get 9 days mc just like that???

It depends on your unit and CO.

To be rejected for deferment, and subsequently getting an MC is like... "Hey! Charge me for malingering!"

Perhaps if you wish, PM me with the unit that you are supposed to report to, I will help you to see if I can locate the chief clerk in that unit.
