My 24-70 has the same issue too. I didn't drop it or knock it and it just appeared out of the blue.

It was still under warranty so NSC replaced it for a new lens.

This is so common that it really worries me..... :(

oh thats very bad QC for a lens selling so ex.. Somemore without VR..

wat a pain, if me... i think i'll will take my lighter out and burn the customer service:bheart: ..
if let say.. your 24- 70 is something happening soon, do u think they will tell the truth if still under 2 months warranty ? and repair it FOC for u ?

does latest batch having the same problem?

Thankfully the batch last year doesn't have this issue being reported. There are reports of brand new lenses shipped with the grinding issue though, so be sure to check properly before you hand over your dough.

You can count me in too (Unlucky Owner Club of Nikon 24-70)......my 24-70 complete barrel changed but lucky found the problem
in time before warranty expire. As this is my main working lens, now wondering when will
the next trip to NCS

Is this an arson threat? if it is meant to be a joke, it is in bad taste and not taken lightly. :nono:

What are you insinuating here? Nikon Singapore is dishonest?

It is ok to express your frustration or opinion of the product but please do not cross the line. As in this example.

Hmmm...

that's like 3 cases I count here ?

Either you guys are seriously giving this lens a big workout on a daily basis or that there is some design flaw which has not been openly addressed by Nikon.

Any idea if this is a cited problem on other major forums as well ???:dunno:

Actualy the biggest joke from my research in various forums is the people getting this issue are the ones who do not use their lens frequently, save one wedding photographer on assignment. :dunno: Most of those affected bought their lens during 2007. No cases noted in 2009 posts, a few during 2008.

I won't be surprised, cos my 24-70 is my most heavily used lens(as a working photographer). Got the first copy when launched. Always on my camera whatever I go for any assignment. Never faced this problem.

Having said that I actually got the barrel changed twice last year - cos on both occasion, I dropped the camera with the lens on (from a good height, camera no damage). As mentioned before, I think the lens is not as hardy as the older 28-70 f2.8

Huh ?? The current Nikon 24-70 has been around that long ? Since 2005 ?? I always thought it was released sometime in later half of 2007 ?? :dunno:

Sorry man, the 2005 one was referring to the squeaky 17-35mm issue which I sorta didn't filter out. Not that I am trying to make stuff up but posting from my phone was a little harder than I thought.

I think the saying "they don't make things as they used to" may have some truth in it. Perhaps the lens in the past are not so complex and the zoom mechanism are simpler.

Anyway, thanks for all your responses and (dumb as I am) I have decided to change it anyway, although I didn't have to - I am sure there wasn't any optical degredation. I just didn't want to live with the stigma that something is wrong inside. And the new mechanism could be of newer design and rectified whatever fault, although there wasn't any fact to prove this. (Ah Q rationale :-) )

I had used a copy which had some barrel issue, having issue of zoom in and out.. belong to a buddy of mine..
During our trip in taiwan, it gone from bad to worse.. is so hard to turn that i finally give up and mount back my 18-35..

But when i came back to sg, i went to pick up a copy of 24-70, so far no issue for me, lets keep my fingers crossed.

Hope nikon can give us a reply on this issue, why will one encounter this issue, without dropping or frequently use.

Been following this thread with a bit of sadness and disappointment. Can you imagine paying $70K for a brand new Japanese car and then having to fork out another $27K after one year just to continue using it?

Glad I have a small collection of good old AIS lenses. :)

At least for lenses, you can use the old AIS without the need to fork out a few thousands to get a "Certificate of Entitlement" to use it beyond the 10yrs. hahahahaha :bsmilie:

Are you saying it's time we should abandon AF-S and adopt ZF2? ;)

I had mine changed too, but my problem was clear, sand dust lodged in the zoom barrel, rendering my zoom stuck at a point. No choice but to change, and under warranty too!!
