Noktor 50mm f/0.95 for M4/3 Fastest Lens

Since the crop size is 2x, i guess most ppl would multiple the aperture by 2 as well.

Take 50mm f/1.4 for instance, on M4/3 it'll become 100mm on FF equivalent.
But its not 100mm f/1.4, because its DOF is still a 50mm DOF, not a 100m DOF. So 100mm f/2.8 on FF equiv would make more sense.

An f/0.95 should be equal to f/1.9 on FF or f/1.5 on APS-C (~30% larger)

Correct me if i'm wrong :p

Actually, it is still a 50mm f0.95 on a m4/3,just that when converting for 35mm film equivalent, it gives you the same view as a 10mm with a f2 depth of field, but the amount of light going in is still f0.95

Precisely .. and you took the words right out of my mouth, the part where the amount of light going in is the same at f0.95 even though we are mounting the lens on 1/2 the size of a FF sensor; however, I still don't 100% understood what you were saying. Oxymoron I know but hoping to clear this off my head once and for all.

Yes, the light goes in will still be f/0.95. but the DOF will be be that of f/1.9 in FF

After seeing Steve Huff's latest pics from the Noktor, this is a lens I am not keen on, maybe for others ...

With regards to dof and bokeh, a 25mm f/2 dof/bokeh quality on m4/3 for example has the same quality as this same 25mm lens on a full frame, shot at the same distance.

Obviously, at the same distance, the m4/3 will show half of the picture area captured on full frame (more or less, as in my tests, my 25mm on m4/3 was still a bit wider than my 50mm on full frame).

A 25mm f/2 will have a focal length of a 50mm on m4/3, but still the dof/bokeh of a 25mm f/2.

If one wants to have the shallower dof/bokeh of a 50mm f/2, then one has to use a 50mm f/2, but similar to the 25mm, it's focal length will double to 100mm.

Some clamor for m4/3 manufacturers to come out with faster lenses. They want to have the dof/bokeh quality of a 100mm lens when using a 50mm lens in m4/3 for example, and not the 50mm lens' inherent dof/bokeh.

Fast lenses are always welcome, but it's not simply automatic that a m4/3 25mm f/1.4 lens will have a similar dof/bokeh quality as a 50mm f/2 lens on full frame, when attempting to capture the same area as captured on full frame.

Rather than gnashing their teeth, these folks should just understand how to make use of this "automatic" cropping feature to one's compositions, be more creative and work with it.

If they can't, just get a full frame dslr ;p, saves all the headaches for those who cannot adapt to m4/3 (or 4/3) in their compositions.

I haven't heard of any medium format user having issues about their 35mm full frame as having inferior dof/bokeh. Maybe they know how to adapt better

So does this means that in order to achieve the same DOF of 1.2 lens on FF, on a m43 sensor, you need to lens to have f0.6 ?? I'm not aware the relationship is directly porpotional to the crop multiplier, hence my original question. But the current bokeh from .95 lens on m43 do shows a wonderfully shallow DOF.

In any case, i really like the .95 lens, and hope that one day they will make one for EF mount.

more or less,that's a yes

Thanks ! I just did a test, using my 5D2+50/1.2, together with GF1 25mm/.95, with similar composition... And the result is true, at f.95, eye-ball comparison of image on LCD screen, the DOF is about the same as 5D2 with 50mm at f2.

And yes, one of the advantage is definitely on the light gathering ability of the .95, I can virtually shot at ISO 400 even indoor, and low light scene.

I would rather stick with my FD 50/1.4 instead of buying this...

- true, because it is still a 50mm f/0.95 dof on m4/3, not a f/1.8. If this lens had an EF mount, you get the same dof on FF 5D as on m4/3, shot at same distance

For me personally, not bokeh I am after, but with a faster lens, I will be able to take low light shots with E-P1 hand-held. So, a 50mm/f0.95 and 25mm/f0.95 with autofocus would sold me.

And the reason ?
I'm in the same boat regarding keeping an FD f/1.4 over this for now... mainly because at least for me, my FD f/1.4 only cost me something like $40 on eBay...
