No tripods on esplanade bridge!

was at west coast park counting down with my friends, did not expect to see fireworks from there, no time to set up tripod.. can only shoot handheld.. :bsmilie:

I was there, people were streaming in non-stop. Got tripod, no tripod also crowded lah.

The rule is stupid.

I tend to agree that no tripod rule will hamper with the creativity of the photographers. Can someone care to take a 10 secs shot of the firework without any tripod, and show it to us?

well i don't think they check whether you bring in pen knifes or not during the countdown... too many people for them to handle...

if one want to aggressive, anything can become thir weapon... i think a monopod or tripod is a better weapon than pen knife...

i'm not at the esplanade bridge during new year's time,
but i just try to understand the situation there...
i only got this photo of esplanade bridge in the next morning... assuming the safety barrier is there, and the people with tripod i put proportionally there using the girl as reference...
below is the sketch...

it seems a normal guy, with a normal size of tripod, and with normal camera ( ok la.. this guy on my sketch using large format, but tripod size the same mah? ) will blocked half of the circulation of the esplanade bridge. ( can agak agak see it by seeing the tiles patterns.. )
So if i count the capacity of circulation of the bridge... assuming using whole width of it in 5 minutes can cater for 100 people crossing for an end to other end, then now with half width can only take 50 people crossing. Very rough calculation, but i mean you guys get the point right? i think not fair to judge the rules only from "aspiring artistic photographer" point of view... you need to see from public normal people point of view as well... as we shared the same public place....

ok la, i talk too much...

2 legs of the tripod can be against the fencing so effective space taken up would be less

don't blame the aetos people la.. they are paid to carry out management's orders.

Anyway, I think the management was right not to allow tripods. It has to remain safely accessible. The traffic on the bridge can't possibly come to a complete standstill. And if people walking past trip on your tripod, you can wave goodbye to your camera. Might even cause a domino effect and knock down the neighbouring cameras.

If you really want a good vantage point, pay for it (hotel room etc.). i doubt u can get a good 10 sec shot on the bridge anyway, even with a tripod. people pushing past will knock into it.

If you've been a photographer long enough. You should know that many places don't allow tripods. Not only in Singapore, but overseas as well.

If you really want a good spot, then join the press. They normally fence off a square area, even build a raised platform. Only photographers with press pass can enter. Normally heavily guarded.

Just wait for the first time some self righteous photographer sets up their uber large tripod on some crowded public path and then some one trips over it.

Photographer and hapless pedestrian get into a fight, security has to break them up, and the resort's management will respond by banning tripods on the site, tarring all photographers with the same brush.

Most of these 'stupid' rules are the result of a minority being dumb and the rest of us being caught in the net.

One player makes an offense, the rest of the team did not
get off the field. Only the player who makes the offense.

Neither do you see this in the classroom. When one student
makes a funny behavior not the whole class get the punishment,
only that particular student did.

Really it is hard to comprehend the thoughts that go into making
that kind of decision. Photographers always suffer more. Why?
