before 911, you can literally shoot anywhere you want.
govt and office buildings now are afraid of terrorism.
the smaller shops in...say chinatown, just want to hitch on this rule, but their agenda is different.
whether it's for extortion, or for fear of people copying their designs, displays, i dont know.
and seriously, if i do take a photo of those crap, they should pay me instead of me paying them.
it utterly ridiculous.

copying their design ? most of the stuff in Chinatown are brought in from elsewhere. its not like they designed their own........
i can understand if it's the people, i.e. doesn't want to be shoot at. i respect that. but its like there are these no-photography signs everywhere in chinatown. :dunno:
also, with all the ultra clear photos that mobilephone is capable off, only a dumb and stupid terrorist will use a huge a55 dslr with a long zoom lens to shoot openly.

another trick to be able to shoot in hotels, stay there often till the guest relations officer knows you.
for hotels i think its only good to write in for official permission even if its done in a room.

Not when they try to levy an outrageous price tag like City Hall or National Stadium.:thumbsd: and wth?! Botanic also need permission?! Private Property laws are iffy application thanks to our No Privacy Laws!

it's pretty sad singapore now has become like this.
which is why i'm concentrating more on studio.
i really give up on outdoor shoots.

u mean the pillars at city hall there also no photography allowed?i shot there so many times.nobody ever stopped me.
nahhh...anything behind closed doors, hotels wouldnt care.
i've done countless of shoots in hotel rooms, villas.
even the GRO told me usually in rooms, they close one eye.
that is assuming, you dont do a mass orgy shoot inside.....which i dont.

City hall wants 107$ for rental. and $2000 security deposit. National Stadium wants $430 for 4hr block. Apparently City hall's guards have standing orders not to disturb the wedding photogs who go there. anyone else is fair game :thumbsd:

I can understand the need for some courtesy if you intend to do a 'professional' shoot with tripods and light accessories. Hey, if you are going to shoot on my property, at least smile and ask for permission.
What baffles me are places like The National Library. A big lump of taxpayers' money was spent to build a pretty big building with landscaping on the outside, FOR the public to use. I saw parents with kids whip out a little camera, the kids pose, followed by a "OI, no pictures." A young couple had the girlfriend stand next to a bush, boyfriend whips out a phone to snap. "OI, cannot take photo here." It is just beyond me. Did a high ranking librarian decide on the ban? Did the 'security consultant' from Ah Boon Security recommend that it's unwise. Anybody can enter the building dressed in singlets and slippers and take a dump in their shiny toilets. But, you are not allowed to take pictures of the bush beside the pavement outside the building. Hmmm.

This is the first time I heard NLB banning photography. I think I may try it out one day and test their security guard's knowledge and resolve.

i guess it's good someone like you can educate us on photographer's rights to shoot...

This is my story .... :cry:
Last week, 1 moller and 6 shooters at Esplanade Walk, more precise, at the food stalls area. But because it was 9-30 AM, no stalls were open for business and the whole place was deserted. This is the area where we posed the moller ...
Out from nowhere this Boy Scout came out and started chasing 6 adults away with his "lawyer" English about they can't allow people to shoot at the whole Esplanade area (i.e. including the whole 2 durians and all the area surrounding them). I remember 3 weeks ago i was with Mike's group (more than 9 shooters and 5 girls) and we were shooting IN the entrance hall of the theatre and the few guards didn't trouble us at all. In fact they asked the shooters to continue shooting! - those members can confirm if they are reading this.
Then one of us started explaining that we didnt write in for permission as required by him because we are hobbyists, and he mentioned that we joined the shoot from Clubsnap.
Somehow, he seemed to be very familair with Clubsnap and started insisting that he can't allow CS organised shooters here, blab, blab, blab ......
Since we didnt find that place particularly interesting and also not to spoil our mood, we decided to walk to the padang instead.
Then when we were at the walk, with those little concrete shops, I asked the moller to stand by the side wall for a couple of shots.
I was caught by surprise that he actually followed us and walked more than 300 metres to chase us again!
At this point of time, it's obvious that I have lost my kool and we were at a shouting war ... the organizer then pacified me to kool down and asked that we continued the shoot at the padang.
I knew that if I continued then either the managers or the Police will be called in.
Anyway, i have seen enough of these little rascals, abusing their authority and stroking their ego on being a "eat sh1t" Singaporean. How stupid is this idiot to stop us Singaporeans from shooting in a public place where there are thousands of tourists and local?
I gave him a final shot (above) and challenge him to come and get me!
I can only say little boy, Rohuan, if you are reading this, you are such a #%^^*(^%# :nono:

no wedding photogs get to shoot for free. apparently they are worried about alienating the wedding crowd since its a popular wedding spot. BS right?! $107 is for the whole time u shoot there...the plus about that is if u want them to turn on the floodlights they will. just that the security deposit is a big turn off...they think what? im bringing a sledgehammer to the place is it?! the worst is the national stadium (interior) coz the building is just standing there waiting for demolition...dun see how they can dare to ask for $430 for 4hr block...
