after looking at KM and Sigma lenses, i noticed that virtually none has any *SM of any kind(other than the AF 300mm f/2.8 APO G(D) SSM and AF 70-200mm f/2.8 APO G(D) SSM). will this pose any problems like loud whining noises or slow focusing speed? and any reasons why so little KM and third party lenses(KM mount) has *SM?

cos minolta mount have the focusing motor on the body instead of on the lens... except for SSM...

Minolta lenses are not that slow... even with SSM, it is about the same speed at HS series lens.

USM or SSM just make it quiter. Nothing really more than that.. of course, newer lens tend to be more responsive.

Personally, I don't have any problem about whining noise so far.

My only problem with focusing is only when I aimed at the wrong spot.... :embrass:

Low contrast or flat single toned colours that is. :bsmilie: If anyone can get straight on, fast AF on such areas, plz tell me ur camera and lens combination, I'd love to have it.

Sony should come out with more XMM lenses, should be faster than SSM right?

so it is loud is it?

Not in my definition though..

In wedding, it is loud anyway, so AF noise is non existence, portrait, not really as I manual focus most of the time.

As Ctrl DelnoAlt has said, the AF mechanism for Minolta is built into the camera body, and N and C USM/HSM mechanism is built into the lens. (Kinda like Anti-shake vs IS / VR) Well you win some, you lose some. It's just one of those decisions the engineers had to make at that point in time.

We knew what we were getting into. So it's a matter of accepting what the limitations are and moving on... but of course now there's 2 new SSM lenses despite being late to the party. We'll just have to wait and see if Sony will take this technology into future glass...

I got both the 70-200SSM & Sigma 70-200EX, their focusing is almost....almost the same as attached to my upgraded D. Hope it may help!:)

What upgrade have you done on the "D" ? :dunno:

Between both lens, how do you find their color, contrast and sharpness ? :D

I think he upgraded his Dynax 9 to accept SSM lenses.

It's really a timeconsuming issue, I dont' have time to find it out now!;)

wow..i went to try the 7D to take note of the internal focusing in the body. was impressed. minolta engineers must be geniuses to actually come out with the idea of placing the motor in the camera. when i saw the small metal spindel spinning, i finally made sense of the things you guys have been talking about. but king of strange that their lenses are still so ex despite no having motors in them.

Economic of scale really....

If 1 type of lens only got sold 1 million unit, and same lens from other manufacturer sold for 10 million, of course production cost will be less.

seems logical. me not a KM user but thinking hard to switch into due to the AS & AF motor on the body. You find how ex to buy N & C lenses with good FA motor & anti shake function. For KM, every lens mount on the body become AS or "VR " lens. wonderful isn't it? But great concern over the small resale market for KM. Not sure other KM users can share views on that.

Seriously, most minolta user do hang on to their gear longer than their counterpart. Because, Minolta don't change their lenses or come out with new gear that often, hence there is no upgrade needed...

Personally, I don't find the resale is a problem for genuine Minolta items.

if in a quiet place(eg. exams center), is the focusing sound of KM systems very very loud as compared to canon's USM? from forums i had seen, some even said they had to go manual focus to stop being the center of attraction. is it that bad?
