Wondering if the free items are only for those who bought at the IT Show only...

Don't think that you will get the same freebies when buying from Alan Photo at ~$1700.

please do soon. I want to decide to buy at the IT show and sell the 'freebies' or just buy at shops w/o freebies.. anyway it works out to be roughly the same price lah.. ]
just that maybe sell freebies can get a little more money back if there are buyers.

unless i get really tempted by the 350D.. ;p
i hope it isn't really that tiny in my hands..

After getting my hands on the Canon 350D for 10 minutes at IT Show, the Dark Side of the Force suddenly overwhelmed me (the 350D feels strange on my hands, too small). Shall I succumb to the Nikon D70 with freebies or get the D70 elsewhere... ;p .. .. must... resist...

Yeah yanyewkay. Somebody please help us...aaaarrrghhhhh !

it is useless to resist us, give in to the dark side.

Do not underestimate the power of the Dark Side...

I do agree its a better deal, with the tripod, 2x 1GB cards and bag also, which is missing in the 350D package. Canon give umbrella for :dunno:

so is the d70 at the it show a good buy??? or u all rather get 1 at the shops???

Not sure if it is just me, but always think free gift is so-so.

After a while, would compare with those who had done
their homework and source a better quality one.

E.g. Free Tripod will take up space. Sell, may not get what is quoted....

I think the D70 kit is a good deal. The sandisk ultra II 1G are worth about 150 each, so 1988-(2x150)=1688. Thus compared to shops selling at 1700(no free gift), you are getting the tripod, ebook, vest and bag for free.

are they as fast as the lexar 80X cards?

*The force is strong is this one*BREATHE IN*BREATHE OUT*

i'm getting a set soon...still considering getting the it show promotion package...but i don't need the 2 CF cards and vest...and neither do i need the 70 ~ 300mm lens.

anybody wants the 2 CF cards, vest, 70 ~ 300mm lens. sms me your offers at 90111897. we meet up at the show...and buy it together.

The Lexar 80x should be faster on the D70/D2H/D2x especially when you can doing continous shooting.

Hi All,

Forgive me if I appear to be ignorant of the netiquette of this forum - I'm new and only just registered to the forum!

The free Sandisk 1GB cards are only marginally slower than the Lexar 80x cards, according to this website I found:

http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007-6816

You may be interested to know that the Sandisk booth at the IT exhibition is selling the same 1GB cards at $175 each, so the free cards in the Nikon offer alone are worth up to $350 (although you may find better price at Sim Lim for the cards).

As for the free tripod, it felt very sturdy but also very heavy, and so may not be suitable if you intend to take it for long treks! The ball head also looks quite well built. The movement of the head felt a bit stiff but I think it may prove "smoother" once "seasoned" with use. I like the sponge grips on the legs which make carrying easier (though not as good as a carrying handle).

The Canon 350D was not very impressive. It felt very small in my hands and did not look / feel as "professional" as the D70 (my friends who were there agree with me on this) - felt more like a prosumer point and shoot rather than an SLR. Worse, it "hung" while I was trying it out (error message appeared even though I didn't fiddle with any of the advanced settings, just point and shoot). To be fair, it may be because I am unfamiliar with Canon system, but altogether my friends and I were put off by the handling and build.

Which all comes to this - I really want the D70 but money's really tight at the moment. The Nikon package is a good deal but I really have to ask myself if I need/can afford the freebies. I'm also not sure if the D70 price will drop even more in the very near future, given that the 350D is out (even though I don't like it, it is still competition for D70) with RRP of $1999. Frustration!

cheers,
tim

Yes, I think your MO can also be as competitive...

Had a feel of the 350D just now, real small....last finger dangling there, no idea where to hold on. TT's mine impression....

D70 quite good deal comparing to the $2288 we paid few months back with no freebies...tripod is quite sturdy and weighty, can't tell if the quality is there though..

Well if I'm in yr shoes, I'll juz get from shops & save the $$$. Then when ppl start selling their freebies at B&S, then buy wat ever u need from them.

Being a Canon user... I still say get D70... if you can live with the following:
- no cheaper good alternative lens like Canon's 17-40L & 70-200L f4
- no need a battery grip (though u can get the China one)
- IMO poorer AWB than Canon
- can do without 8M pixels
- higher battery consumption (350D seems to use very little power)

but D70 rocks...
- very good kit lens
- 17-55 f2.8 very good range by EX
- 1/500 flash syn speed
- cheaper high end flash SB800 compared to 580EX
- supports WA technology on Lexar cards will make writing to Lexar CFs faster

Of cos many many more other factors
