Nikon Lens Servicing Is It Worth?

Yap I'm curious too. If its a bad case of fungus, will it 'eat' into the coatings on the lens elements? And if can thoroughly be cleaned, will it scrap off the coatings too?

just curious, won't the fungus "eat" into the glass?

the fungus doesn't eat into the glass itself, but the material used to coat the lenses. if i'm not wrong they used to use organic compounds to coat the lens, that's why susceptible to fungus. BUT i don't know what they use to coat lenses now. :dunno:

the fungus will destroy the coating - even if it doesn't 'eat' the coating, removing some of it will make your coating uneven, even after cleaning. may not destroy the lens totally, but may affect the resilience to flare, etc, especially if the lens coating was instrumental in the design of the lens.

in short, prevention is better than cure, so store your equipment properly. as for those infected lens, if you feel that it's worthwhile then go ahead and remove the fungus. personally i think that fungus-infected-and-removed lenses won't suffer that much in terms of acuity.

Just to add to the many advice here that air con actually prevents fungus since the air is dry. I have this room which aircon is on most of the time and the outside air is actually dri-er than the air inside my dry cabinet :P

can i ask y ur camera grow fungus? U're not using it for a long time and where did u keep them? Lately i saw some threads talking bout dry cabinet and thinking to buy one too, but i also see some comment if you are using it once a week like that it shouldn't grow fungus? Is that true? And avoid direct air-con? Hence i put my lens n cam mounted together inside the bag and also inside my cabinet, and i also use it once a week like at least 100 shoots a week. Will that be save out from fungus as well, by the way i'm from Malaysia, sabah. But i think the humidity also the same rite? thx

Is dry box work the same for air-con? :dunno:

The electronic type is similar except that it doesn't blow wind out. Maybe same as air con in the dehumidifying mode. The TEC cools down to below dew point and condensation is collected and channelled out where the heat from the other side of the TEC will evaporate the water outside the cabinet. Similarly for air con, the condensation collected is channelled out into the drain pipe.

The bomb has been dropped....Nikon rang me today and quoted me $1100+ to service the lens including changing of some of the elements....I jokingly told them for that price I might as well consider getting a new lens and they smile...wowwwwww.....

You must show us the photos of the fungus infected elements so that newbies will not hesitate getting dry cabinets.

buddy, what about us that keep ancient cameras without dryboxes? :dunno:

Anyway not many people shoot everyday like you do.. ;p I have many lenses that don't see light very often, so I need a dry cabinet.

Hehe how you see them smile on the phone?

S$1100 is crazy. I had another experience wehre NSC quoted S$80 bucks to replcae two tiny plastic catches on the vertical grip.

I have not bought my dslr yet. I dont think I will get a dry cabinet. Would it suffice to put my dslr in a small compact dry box with silica gel inside? Good enough to keep fungus and dust away?

Yes it should be fine.. Only problem is that you'll have to monitor the silica gel and dry them out quite often. Silica gel with blue-red indicator is claimed to be potentially carcinogenic because of the use of cobalt chloride. There is supposed to be a safe version of silica gel with orange-green indicator but I don't see them in SG yet.

another way to lower the humidity level in your dry box is to let your air con blow right into it
before you close the box.

i have been using this method cos i'm lazy to recharge the silica gel and its working out fine

humidity's btw 45 - 53. .:)
