Nikon FX walk about lens

the Nikon 18-35mm and the Nikon 24-120mm VR are lighter alternative walk about lenses, depending on how wide u want to get .

IMO, any lens can be a walk-around lens as long as you know what are your goals at the end of the day...;)

600mm f/4 VR?

 Then again, maybe i'm wrong. My bad...:)

I normally bring along a 14-24mm and a telephoto lenses when i travel, hence my walk-around lenses are 14-24mm and 85mm. And if i'm in town, normally just a prime lens.

Hi!

IMHO if you need a small light walkaround lens for FX, I find the 50mm 1.4 more than enough for me. I can cover the 24-70 range by just taking a few steps back or forward if the situation allows it.

And its length is only 4.25 cm and its light at only 230g for the D version (from nikon website)
much much shorter than any zoom if that is what you are looking for.

Hope you find what you are looking for, and if you find that canon equipment is more attractive to your needs by all means make the switch if you have to, it just boils down to personal preference.

OMG.... 24-70 f2.8 as walk-about lens???

Try a 35mm f2D for FX body or a prime that provides 35mm EFL on DX bodies. Primes are lighter. :D

Lots of good suggestion coming in. I will go try out the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 in the shops.:)

try the old 28-70 3.5-4.5 or the 28-105 3.5-4.5. i use the latter and its pretty good. sharp and very low distortion. its one of those that are v good but seldom heard about. the former has been reviewed on photozone with v good results too.

benjamin

second 35mm f2. ez to carry around

I third the 35mm f2 option. I use it for my entire trip in HK.

+1 for the50mm f/1.4..

Unfortunately Nikon do not have a 24-105 f/4 VR which will be great as a walkaround zoom... yet

50mm f/1.4

Second this. My fav lens - small, light weigth, sharp and fast (even mine is the 1/4 AIs). While having the 24-70mm range is good, weight and size is more important to me for walk about lens.

Nikon 20-35mm f2.8,Diamond wide-angle zoom and Prime lens killer.compact but professional solid built. If you don't mind the vintage! :bsmilie:

Been reading this thread with interest.. Just like to know what's wrong with the DX. I personally would use a DX for walkabouts. No matter what, the optics are still smaller and thus lighter than those made for FX because of the reduced sensor size and thus smaller image circle.

Thanks Senior, f4 is fine with me. So which f4 Nikon Zoom lens is good for walk about??

Also, by going with an f/4 lens, you are also negating the benefits of going FX.

Hmmm... Anyone using either the 16-35mm VR or 20mm 2.8d lens? In a dilemma choosing between these two. Anyone can help me out? Thanks!

actually, everyone's walkaround could be different

i go with the "cult" afs 55-200mm non VR

if u really desire light, a compact is a good alternate

TS asking for FX, not DX lens.

I decided to go checkout both the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 and Nikon 50mm f1-8. May buy both at one go coz I am currently stationed in Maldives dun wan to make a return trip home just to buy another lens if I miss tis chance.

BTW have any bros try the Nikon 18-35 f3.5/4.5 on a FX body before? How the actually results? Internet reviews so far gave good comments and says that its value for $$$.

Hey bro, I did use this lens b4 & tried on the D700. It's an ok lens abeit the distortion but acceptable to me as I'm just a hobbyist photographer. Just hv to be careful with the angle of shooting. It's most certainly a value for $$ lens & I got it for something like $500+ frm B&S. Since had pass it on to my Bro-I-L & got myself the 17-35 from bro numnumball. BTW the 50f1.8 is a DX lens. Cheers
