was initially thinking of getting a canon 450D body + tamron 17-55 f2.8 lens.

because the nikon d90 seems quite ex.

I am loving the D90 after 1-2 months. However, its all up to the person behind the lens to determine what results he/she will get. I PERSONALLY (Individual opinion) think that Nikon have better control over high ISO performance, higher frames per second (fps), clearer LCD (920K dot) and ease of use over their menus. Not to mention better handling as well, but the video is certainly not worth mentioning unless you plan on carrying out a tripod every time you want to take a video, but the Canon 450D has a live histogram and its much lighter not to mention a slightly larger selection of lenses which is cheaper that he Nikon equivalent. But of course you pay for the latest technology in the Nikon. However back to your question, I don't think these deals are really worth it as many people have bought it at a cheaper price with more freebies, you can check them out here: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/showthread.php?t=417473 And the deals is wrong, as you should not get cheated of the wonderful 18-105 VR lens which should come with the kit.
Lastly like many people urge you, go down to the shops and try out the cameras that you plan on buying.

P.S Is there a Tamron 17-55 F2.8 lens? I have only heard of the 17-50 F2.8 lens, pardon me if I'm wrong.

the d300 package at cathay photo was $2180 last week. lowepro bag, lexa 300x 4gb card, lenspens, camera armor. can pay via credit card somemore... maybe the price would have gone up by now.

OT a bit. There has been quite a comotion and discussion at Canon thread as 5D MK2 has officially made its appearence at SITEX. So, I just wonder will Nikon cut their Cam's price futher inorder to take on C Camp's new challenge.(I really hope they will do it)
