I think we should wait for the actual 1 on 1 comparisons to have a better conclusion.
Not as if I can afford to buy/use either
As for now as has always been 135 format is more flexible and portable.
Larger format had the upper hand in absolute quality and size (esp. for large prints).
Personally, I'm more interested in the shallower DOF on 67 (on film) for personal use.
Resolution is not really the point for me on MF film.

Having used Digital Medium Format I agree its a different league of its own.
The question however, is how many people are shooting MF for the dof and 16 bit color and dynamic range. Most commercial photographers use mf because of the mega pixels and the rendition of the image ( due to lack of aa filter and the lenses). Also given today's post processing abilities similar colors are not very difficult to render in post process.
Give the 36 mpx sensor which easily matches what most digital backs give ( 30 to 50 mpx) and the lack of the AA filter is will be a worth while alternative given that most the commercial photographers anyway use the top line of nikon lenses I honestly believe the D800 is gonna make a lot of people think twice about shifting to MF.
I'd like to keep my MF gear just because I love it. I also see myself getting a D800 in the future

Here is a brief translation for you:
"Introducing the D800, Nikon rep specifically talked about the two competing products: the first product directly when pointed out that P Club of the 645D (Pentax said that lying low also got shot) . Nikon given comparison sample of the low-pass filter design, the Nikon D800 screen moiré suppression is far superior than no low-pass filters of the P 645D. Which one is the competing product other than P? Can guess.
I have a FF and tried the D backs (since Contax 645 D) for a while. I am an amateur and I think it is a waste of time doing all the post processing.
And the results are fake and the people look like cartoon..... (not I say one hor, quoted from pros in the business)

I translated the Chinese stuff on Babelfish and it was very hard to understand
(though I roughly made out the same thing you translated)But all theses are just chest thumping right? (and marketing talk)
The proof will be in the photos (when someone eventually gets both to compare).
No doubt D800 will be keeping plenty of ppl on their toes, be it 35mm or 645.
I just hope all this translates to cheaper 5DII; D700; 645D; MFDB or whatever FF/MF, so that ppl at the bottom of the buying table like me can get hold of one at a cheaper price.

Suddenly, i realized that D800 is a great camera! Much much more better than canon and nikon older ff camera, i am sure it can surpass those mf camera as well. I will upgrade as well if I can afford. Those who can nearly afford, why not sell your current ff camera and aim for this. You can try selling it at a lower than market rating cost for some fast cash. Nowadays B&S getting more competitive, so you might want to bundle some freebies along as well.

Well, for those who already own a P45+ and above, no. I do not expect these users to dump their P45+ in exchange for a D800E.
However, for those who have not bought into any MF system yet and are considering, the D800E may be a competitor as it diverts sales that would otherwise go to the MF manufacturers.
Competition is not all about specs and IQ. It is also about price.
Well, for those who already own a P45+ and above, no. I do not expect these users to dump their P45+ in exchange for a D800E.
However, for those who have not bought into any MF system yet and are considering, the D800E may be a competitor as it diverts sales that would otherwise go to the MF manufacturers.
