Nikon D80 with a 70 -200 Vr

hI Ken & Jack,

Thanks for the advice and feedback. I am an avid photographer and believe photography will be a lifetime hobby for me. My intention is to buy this Gem once & for all and aid me in low light conditions and offer me shape images @2.8 for day shots etc. I have desire to shoot at weddings. I have tokina 12-24 f4, 18-200 VR nikon, 50mm nikon 1.8 & 18 -135 mm nikon with me. I m into sports like cycling and running. And will be taking shots of it 2. Buying it now then to slowly explore this gem is mine intentions.

What's yr take on this

2.8 is absolutely usable.!! unlike my 17-55, which i often push it a little more to F4, this 70-200 can be used at 2.8 with great sharpness.

from the gears you have now, the 70-200 will be a very big jump. This is a pro lens, and yours are mostly consumer lenses. the 70-200 feels great in hand, and provides you with superb performance.

you wont regret. unless a better and sharper version of 70-200 with VR II comes out, this will be the ultimate choice. actually the AFS 80-200 is sharper, but it has no VR, which is a great tool.

yep, its what i have, what i experienced and will recommend to everyone who can afford it. no second choice, no second thought.

I'm planning to get the 70-200 VR sometime soon. Just wondering which brand of UV filter you guys are using? Do you guys use product like Lenscoat or any similar product?

Dont think u need lens coat for this lens... too small for lens coat...

UV, no money, hoya/vitacon, got money, Nikon/B+W.

I use kenko Superpro LC37. not bad...

Im not too sure how much the Nikon and B+W ones cost.

but for hoya, 77mm HMC should cost around 30 bucks, kenko superpro LC37, around 50.

im not using teleconverters. i find no need of that. a 1.4x TC will reduce the aperture to F4, and 2x will make the lens a F5.6. and TCs will severely affect the sharpness and focus speed. i find it better just to crop.

The B+W ones I think I paid about S$120 if I remember correctly.

If your paying so much for a quality lens there is no point putting a cheap hoya filter in front of it. It will just degrade all the image quality you just paid for. Id recommend no filter, or buy the best, Nikon or B+W both are around $120

Totally agree with wildstallion, since you are already paying over 2K for the qualityof the len, no point in buying a cheap filter.

haha, the lighting is very challenging ah... not easy to take pictures.. unless you have a D3:bsmilie::bsmilie: shooting at ISO6400

I have a 70L Digi Dry Cabi...check the depth dimension...if the 50L and 70L have same depth dimension..then it should fit the 70-200vr.

something to do wif stress on the glass..by placing the lens in a vertical position..the glass elements are rested in a flat position..some ppl oso mention abt placing the lens wif rear element down..but i doubt my 70-200 can stand still wif rear element down, so its always with the front element down..correct me if i'm wrong..

I assume you are using the 70L for your 70-200 in horizontal position.

I checked the spec. Both model the Depth seem to be the same.
