can i know what is the difference between 18-200mm VR and 70-200mm VR? is it only the apperture is differ? Newbie here. thx
As the 18-200mm is only selling at $1100 and the 70-200mm is selling at 2.8k? and they both reach is the same like 11.1x optical zoom? Then what make it so expensive?

One word which commands the few thousands.. f2.8

The smaller constant aperture, the glass elements used, the built.

BTW the 70-200mm is a 200/70 ~ 3x zoom, not an 11x zoom like the 18-200m

can i know how the f2.8 n the f5.8 take place? Like is it the lower it goes f2.8 and below, the widest or the clearer or the furthest it can reach? In that case 70-200 vr is only 3x optical zoom, then it could only use for close or macro shot? As i'm thinking to get the 70-300 vr for a longer zoom, can't reach for those far objects, and of course my 18-200 vr and can't make a close shot like macro. I'm thinking to get myself a converter, i saw my uncle have a macro converter and a tele converter, 2 in 1 right? Wonder what brands are available n better in quality. By the way, i'm using D80 also. thx

Hi sciguy

I think there are some misconceptions that you might find useful to read up more.

The further reach you will be referring to the focal length, e.g a 400mm will let you shoot further objects than say at 100mm. The smaller the focal length the wider field of view you get. The aperture does not give you wider or clearer or further capabilities

As to whether one lens is clearer than the other ... hmmm think it depends on the quality of the glass and the design

The aperture is the focal length of the lens divided by the actual aperture size in the same units. Hence it is a relative term that makes comparison across different lens sensible.

The smaller the aperture numerical number, the more light it can admit through the lens.

Optical zoom ratio has got nothing to do with macro or close up. The 70-200mm will not be able to do macro work by itself

Macro converter and teleconverter are not the same. what do you mean by 2 in 1 ?

Cheers

Thx for the info, oo, my uncle's converter is 2 in 1, it has a macro and tele converter in 1 tool, donno what brand is that, but only can c made in germany. U know what brand is that? thinking to buy that if that helps alot

There is a white one?

But i prefer black cos the white looks like canon. No offence though ;p

BTW, the lens hood for this lens look intimidating.....

what's the price diff between the white and black one? anybody know? :dunno: i feel like getting the white one..look nice though:sweatsm:

Actually no diff, same as silver and black colour version for some of the cams. White ones maycost slightly higher because of limited stocks.

Get it! You wont regret. It is a great great lens.

D80 will work great with the 70-200 VR, i own both of them.
Superb performance, and very sexy looking.

I took a lot of hot photos for it. haha!

of course, use the right tool for the job, but if you're looking for a tele-zoom, there is none better than the 70-200VR in the nikon lineup (save the 200-400VR super tele-zoom)... the VR is a great advantage for handheld shooting. shots wide open are still relatively sharp.

as for the D80, might not be the most advance camera (AF system, MP, etc), but more than sufficient for most purposes. for low-light shooting, iso400 is still very usuable, max i would go would be iso800 (ymmv).

the combo might feel a little front-heavy, but still a great combo to have...

hI Ken & Jack,

Thanks for the advice and feedback. I am an avid photographer and believe photography will be a lifetime hobby for me. My intention is to buy this Gem once & for all and aid me in low light conditions and offer me shape images @2.8 for day shots etc. I have desire to shoot at weddings. I have tokina 12-24 f4, 18-200 VR nikon, 50mm nikon 1.8 & 18 -135 mm nikon with me. I m into sports like cycling and running. And will be taking shots of it 2. Buying it now then to slowly explore this gem is mine intentions.

What's yr take on this

Thanks

The 70-200mm VR is a very capable rig and has lived up to expectations of alot of users.
It should serve u well in action / sports photography, weddings as well ( for the more telephoto end )
