Hope that my D70 can last until D200 comes out, then got excuse to get new camera

Hi all,

I bought mine cam last Mar 2004 (suppose to be the first batch) and it failed me
in around SEP or OCT 2004 (which is still under warranty) and they got it fixed stating
that they changed some PCB.

However, this week, mine cam (now out of warranty) got the same problem again.

So the theory that if the PCB is changed, it will not happen is not true now.

I am worried if next time it failed again, what am i supposed to do since by then
it will be more than half a year over the warranty.

Really feel like a time bomb to me...

Just for everyone's info in case you thought the problem may not occur again.

Since espn is a bit slow nowadays...;p

Let me just say what he will always say, "Send it in."

Even if not free you still need to send it in right? But chances are, they will waive it.

I just collected mine last week.. Yes.. they waived the charge. another good news is it only took 4 working days for my D70 to repair

In short...

Purchased a D70 in Mid-March, 2004. Just after they came out.

Took some photos one weekend. Everything went fine. Put my D70 in my bag. Take it out next weekend and the camera is dead and I have BGLOD! This after having owned it for 14 months. Did some research and found I wasn,t the only person with this problem. Send it to Nikon (Melville, NY) with letter of explanantion for service. Start hoping I won't be charged for the repair.

4 Weeks later... receive camera back, take it out. Notice that body cap is missing and so is the original cardboard packing (from the original box) that I sent it in. Insert battery and CF card and start checking things out... takes me about 20 minutes to determine that the illumination buton doesn't work correctly. Pack it up and send it back. I ask for my body cap and packing materials back. About 2 weeks after sending this back for repair I find a good deal on a second D70 with Kit Lens and go for it. Hey, call me nuts!

3 Weeks later... receive the camera back, take it out. Notice this time that body cap has been returned but the cardboard packing is still missing and most importantly, so too is my original battery. (Yes I was an idiot for sending the battery with the camera but hey, it came back fine the first time!) Insert battery and CF card and start checking things out... After about 6 photos and 20 minutes, camera appears to be working OK! Put camera on counter for the night and go abou tmy business.

Next day... come home from work and have BGLOD. Again!

Next day... send camera back to Melville, NY (overnight) asking them to return my cardboard packaging and original battery and fix my camera!

Spoke to Nikon Tech Rep... said it took 24 to 48 hrs to get something into the system AND THAT UPON DOING A THIRD REPAIR NIKON BEGINS EVALUATING IF THE CAMERA SHOULD BE REPLACED...

Going on vacation at the end of August... sure hope they just decide to send me a new D70s for my troubles...

Had my Memory Compressor PCB and CE PCB changed after CF card failure with error message: "This card cannot be used", took over 2 weeks for Nikon to test and replaced parts as problem was intermittent.....luckily has 2 yrs extended warranty still...otherwise its serves me very well.

Kudos for extended warranty.... Where did u buy the cam??

Luckily I bought mine in Dec 2004...so far so good, the cam has not betrayed me. But just in case, I also got a D70s.

mine is also this period, think mar04.

i am going to take as many pic as possible to squeeze out all the juice it it before it spoilt, then go D200

Mine is destinied to end up as my backup body for my gf to use.

Bought my D70 around May 2004 and experienced the sudden death in the middle of Columbia Icefield, Canada. Send to Nikon Center and still not ready after 9 days. Luckily I read about the D70 faults in this Forum and brought a spare camera and that saved my vacation's shots.
Cheers

When I first read this thread I was thinking "why are these ppl so back luck to have got a fault D70 unit?" cause mine had been working fine since day one.... until yesterday night. Me and a group of friend are going down to a jazz pub, and I think would be nice to take some shots of the ambient and the performers there. To my horror, the cf light blinking and the meterng is all off, and later become non-resoponsive, even if i turn the camera off the cf light still blinking! It is really bad timing as I think my warranty had lapsed. Really, if this is a manufacturing problem and if i am ended up paying for the repair I would really pissed. Time to diggout my warranty and check with nikon service for answer.
Will update with response from nikon service staff.

Got my D70 back from nikon sg. Took about 7 days and they waived the charges even my warranty is expired for about 6 months. The girl said this will not happen again after the repair. :| Anyway consider myself lucky as this was not happened during a trip or some important event.
