NIKON D500 - Quick and dirty High ISO noise test

Need to take this drug for fast action birds shooting. Thanks Nikon engineers for 5gen Expeed that enhanced AF in cam.

Nice action shot !

One of the cool features for the D500 (and D5) is you can assign focus mode to a function button. You can even do focus mode + AF-ON.

I now have my back button AF-ON button assigned to AF-Auto + AF-ON. With AF-C, its great when you have a suitable-sized bird flying in front of you and you want to track it. (Since auto finds the objects closest to you)

I have another button assigned to D25 when i temporary need a larger 'spread' of AF-points. I default to single mode. (Some have adviced to use 3D AF as default, since its the only mode you can't assign to the buttons for now)

I faced the same problem too. Apparently it's the older version batteries "EL-N15 Lo-ion 01" that is the cause of this "Short" battery life.
The battery that came with my D500 is the newer ones- Li-ion 20.

Am waiting for Nikon Singapore for the battery exchange for my "old" batteries too.

Just had my EN-EL15-01 replaced with EN-EL15-20 @ Nikon Service Centre (Singapore). Just bring Warranty Card and Sales Receipt of a D500. Limited to 5 batteries only.

Thanks for info

I believe this is under warranty, have you bring to Nikon for assessment?

Not yet. I will monitor the situation first. Will let the battery go through a few charging cycles.

Today I also exchange 2 new batteries.. Thks Nikon Singapore .

The problem is that I am facing this low battery life issue with newer Li-ion20 battery!

interesting, can you share more about this, like what are on and what are off, then how does the batteries lifespan looks like.

things that consume battery includes:-
1. how long does the camera goes to stb when its idle
2. anything to do with the LCD (eg: liveview, brightness, preview and etc)
3. auto-focus tracking duration
4. bt/nfc/wifi status (best if all off, or activate flight mode)
5. power switch position (totally off, or in low power idle standby)
6. type of card used
7. type of file used

and the list goes on...

Have anyone update the firmware? Is there any improvement not mentioned by Nikon?

Was there a firmware upgrade ? I thought it was for the D5 ?

Hi, I need some advice with matching lens to my D500. I am currently using the Camera with Tamron 16-300, I am considering if I should get a 70-200 F2.8 lens to replace the Tamron. With the capability of the D500, will there be obvious advantage spending the extra money?

Go rent or borrow a 70-200 f/2.8 for a test shootout vs the Tamron. Then evaluate the image quality from the both lenses & then decide. ;)

I called them and the lady on the phone asked me to just bring it down. I did only for the counter to tell me "out of stock". I complained "why didn't your staff I spoke to yesterday tell me this? I specifically asked if I can come." She calmly replied "that's the hotline, they won't know our stock situation." Wasted trip... pissed...

Sorry to hear that Uncle Fai. I was wondering why is Nikon Singapore so quiet about this exchange no mention about it on their website. You have to call and ask them. Would be interesting to know how many batteries they have replaced.

Ouch. I feel for you. I was having a hard time earlier this year getting EN-EL15s (both the shops and nikon SG had no stock) So this round I called ahead to reserved. Swapped out 4 of my old batts

In general, always safe to ask Nikon if they have stock for ANYTHING you need. Last time i went down to replace the rubber parts, only to realise they got no stock. (I called ahead to check if it was a same day service which they said yes.. well i didnt ask if they had stock. lol)

So Nikon SG is playing if you don't ask they won't tell. Don't ask about EN-EL15 replacement they keep quiet, don't ask about stock for batteries or parts they won't say anything....

En-EL 15

Guys, need your advice on the D500 batt.

1) Does it mean that the Li-Ion20 batt specific to the D500 cannot be used in other bodies, like the D7000?

2) If I have several Li-Ion01 batteries currently used in my D7000, could I get them changed to the Li-Ion20? (I read in this thread Nikon allows up to 5 batteries to be exchanged)

Appreciate your comments and opinion on the above. Thanks guys!

The EN-EL15 Li-ion 20's can be used on D500 and all older bodies. The Li-ion 01 can also be used on the D500 BUT you will not get the 1,240 shots per charge.
Yes you can exchange up to 5 batteries if you show you d500 warranty card and a purchase receipt. But call and check that they have stock before going to Nikon.
