I haven't tried on it extensively. My 17-55 is mainly for my d2 for assignments.

d40 is for daily-bring-it-everywhere-and-travel camera

I tried the D40 in a store recently but found that the focusing speed seems slower than D80. Could this be due to the D40 kit lens?

I am hoping that owners of D40 could share their experience on the focusing speed of D40 in typical room light and in low light. Is the focusing speed good enough to focus a toddler who is constantly moving about.

thanks

d80 uses the same focusing CAM1000 as d200 which usually performs faster than d50/d70s/d40...

Anyone bought 3rd party spare battery already?

How's the battery life?

As mentioned previously, the D40 is targetted at a different market segment. More for those PnS shooters who wanna try DSLR for fun and at a low cost.

The serious shooters should consider other cams such as D50, D70 or D80...

Which DSLR (D50, D70 or D80) would you suggest to someone who previously had a SLR for many years?

D80. Or, if you are serious, D200 is better. Not to mention single digit Nikon dslr  .

Arto.

I would say D200 too, at its lower price now, if serious ...

I checked out the D40, it sure feels like a toy, and weighs like a toy as well even with the lens ! It should go into a very small bag too. The salesman couldn't answer me when I said it felt like a toy, so I relieved him from his frozen look of discomfiture by saying I'll take it anyway, since it was just what I wanted :) as it fits my needs for a DSLR at the moment. Well almost, I wish it had 12mp

At any rate, it's fun using it for the occasional times I have to use a DSLR, and the lens kit is just fine.

One thing I noticed about the D40's kit lens ... I was playing around with it under very dim light, focusing at the ashtray. I kept getting closer until about 3 - 4 inches, and it was still auto-focusing and locking well on the target, in very dim light without hunting !

Took several shots, and great. IMHO, this is a very good lens (for the price) that can pose as a macro lens too, beats the 18-200 in this aspect. Even the 17-35 f2/8 can't get this close, and the 105mm VR had to hunt in less than ideal lighting.

Is it ok to get AF-S 18-200 VR lens instead of the kit lens?

Of course, why not, if you want more range. But then it also becomes much heavier. Ken Rockwell has a picture of the D40 with 18-200VR in his review of the D40. I think it's a very good lens that can be considered for travelling and fun to have, if you really want the additional range. As for me, I don't need it.

On the other hand, I don't know if they can sell the D40 body alone.

I also got the Lowepro Omni Sport, beautiful bag and it fits the D40 kit perfectly, small and truly slim. And I can even carry it with my little finger for a long time, packed with the D40 :) It can also fit in the D40 with 18-200, but I'll need more fingers then ...

Actually the kit lens is not too bad.

sorry for the ignorance

but can my existing nikon lenses (24mm fixed, 35-80mm and 80-200mm ) , all autofocus lenses currently used with my SLR N50 (bought 10 yrs ago in States) be used/fixed on todays' DSLR like D70/D40 or D80?

thks in advance

You can use them. But manual focus only.

Some people will tell you you cannot use them but what they actually mean is that you cannot autofocus with them on the newer D40/D80....
