Nikon D40?

Seems a bit ironic to me, if the D40 is targeted at the new DSLR user market, yet the design will not accept normal AF lens. Forces the newbies to splash on the considerably more expensive HSM and AFS lenses. :dunno:

HSM may or may not work... no one tested yet.

And anyway, this is meant for those who want a simple camera. Shoot and you get good pics straight out of the box. And also, Nikon seems to be moving on the AF-S as a new standard.

I won't be surprised if they change all the existing ones to AF-S...

Then, i suggest newbies go for the second hand D70s on sale here for about $700 and purchase a third party lens that are just as good as the lens supplied with the D40 kit. That is, if size and AF speed doesn't matter.

As mentioned previously, the D40 is targetted at a different market segment. More for those PnS shooters who wanna try DSLR for fun and at a low cost.

The serious shooters should consider other cams such as D50, D70 or D80...

3rd party lenses for Canon needs to have a built in motor also. So won't have much difference..

D40 owner, fyi Sigma's HSM lens can be use on your D40 (some seller don't know until I test and show them haha), Is limited choice but better then Nikkor AF-S only rite :) and not all AF-S or HSM are expensive they are some quite resonable priced lens.

I can confirmed HSM AF works with D40 coz just got me a 10-20mm after much consideration ;)

New to DSLR.

Hands-on with a D40 earlier at Courts Tampines.

Want to ask, If I buy the D40, how much can I expect to pay for a normal telephoto/zoom lens that I can use with it?

Hi,

I was looking for the size comparison image posted by Gizmo at the beginning of this thread, but realised the link is now broken. Anyone knows where I can find that image?

Thanks!

Any opinion on Nikon lens AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED?

cheers.

Size of D40 comparison? Here's D2x and D40. You can see how small D40 is.

Just wondering, is a 55-200mm f4-5.6G lens a good compliment to a d40 kit? First of all i'm under a tight budget as well so 55-200 is quite a reasonable lens to go with in my opinion.

Thanks!

Will be interesting to see if the D40 is still visible if the huge 17-55 is mounted on it.

I had a chance to play with my bro-in-law's 2 days ago. Honestly, I must say, it is a really solid feeling little camera.
