Hopefully Nikon made AF-S 50mm f/1.4 DX in not so far future  . Small, fast, hopefully cheaper than current 50mm f/1.4 AFD  .

Arto.

Actually.. at DX sensor specs, I'd rather have the 35mm f1.4... Then it'll give us a perspective of 52.5mm on the 1.5x crop factor. ;)

But a 35/1.4 can buy dunno how many 50/1.4! But if they can bring the price of a DX version down to that of the 50/1.4, then it would be viable!

I think the 50/1.4 affordable enough to warrant a redesign. :P

Yup... let's hope that they can make it affordable... I think it's high time they get the primes re-assigned for DX versions...

wonder can D40 auto focus on Sigma lenseS?

Anyone who is bothered enough to use primes on the DSLR, would pick D80 over the D40.
A prime might be a concept too outdated for the target users of D40. They are used to the P&S zooms and thats the least they expect from their DSLR. Most might not even bother to buy another lens let alone a 200$ prime( 50mm f1.8). They would just want to put everything on 'auto', aim and shoot. Camera takes care of rest. Thats what D40 is designed to deliver.

As the bros here have mentioned,

THE 18-55 is a AF-S lens and WILL autofocus on the body. So what's the issue now?? :dunno:

Yoh dude....

sorry for my blurness.. You are right. The D40 kit comes with a AF capable lens..:embrass:

My mistake. Guess this is one hell of a camera then!?!?! HooRay!! :bsmilie:

Does it have motor on lens? If not, you can use it on D40, but no Auto Focus.

Check the Sigma Lens Chart

My understanding is that its not HSM so it shouldnt work. HSM is the Sigma equivalent of Nikon's SWM (Silent Wave Motor). SWM is the "S" in AF-S lenses that are compatibile with D40.

Someone corect me if I am wrong.

Hi Snapnut,

The auto focus function will not work on the Sigma 18-200mm lense, because this lense does not have the HSM. However, sigma 10-20mm lense should be able to work on the D40 becuase it has HSM, but still need to physically test to confirm.

I own both lenses, since the HSM of Sigma 10-20mm works with D80, D70, D50, quite likely it should work with D40, but again, I can't guarrenty.

Thanks for all updates on the sigma lens compatibility.
Guess most Sigma lenses are out... tot can save some $$

I think sigma got more to worry... anyway, since 3rd party makers have long been able to produce lens for canon, shouldn't be a prob to make non-HSM driven lens for D40. Just wait and see.

different target segment,
i think the new product line up will make lots of money for Nikon

Ya lor, somehow I find that it's a good strategic move by Nikon to deal with different segment of the market. In fact I am impress with this D40, small and nice for travelling yet more responsive than the prosumer camera. For those who like quality snap shots and starting into DSLR with a small budget; it's worth to take a look at this D40. Eagerly awaiting for a review from Dpreview on this cam!

Seems a bit ironic to me, if the D40 is targeted at the new DSLR user market, yet the design will not accept normal AF lens. Forces the newbies to splash on the considerably more expensive HSM and AFS lenses. :dunno:
