Yes you can use it... just have to do manual focusing...
Buy an AF lens and use it for manual focusing photography ... hmmmmm..... may be a start of a new trend

Not sure the diff is due to one being zoomed out and the other one zoomed in. :dunno:
The shapes of the elements look the same. Dont think they can make such drastic changes to the positions of the elements without redesigning the elements.
Really strange...
Nikon aiming at people moving up from Point-N-Shoot camera. How can this be where there is no AutoFocus on the kit lens?
When you factor in the more expensive lens for AF, it will not be entry level anymore.
Huh?? Why no Autofocus?? there is always autofocus for AFS lenses.
I dun think you can use MF lenses... but you'd be forced to use manual focusing for the AF-D or AF lenses on the D40 camera...
Err... not that familar with Nikon lens but what I meant was, the Kit Lens has no Auto Focus.
So even if the price is <$1000, if you really need the AF function, and you fork out extra to purchase it, it will end up being very close to the Canon D400 price.
Eh... I dun get you. All current DSLRs (including this D40) have autofocus. What do you mean, no autofocus? :dunno:
Maybe he mean there is no AF screw for non AF-S or AF-I lens in D40. So your AF/AF-D lens can not auto focus on D40. I might be wrong :dunno: .Eh... I dun get you. All current DSLRs (including this D40) have autofocus. What do you mean, no autofocus? :dunno:
AFAIK, kit come with 18-55mm AFS lens, which is Autofocus in D40.Errr.... According to the review, the AF will only work with AF-S lens if you need autofocus.
Else you will need to do manual focus with the ring on the lens.
Kit lens does not provide AF, which is why I stated, it is a strange package since it is targeting PNS camera users. And it does not help when I read that the D40 will not be sold as Body only.

Check this D40 lens mounting, there is no AF screw on it:

I also surprise...

Arto.
majority of the new lenses are of AF-S so i don't it'll pose too much of a problem =)
Only problems are the primes.. they are all AF or AF-D... tat's a bummer for those who have primes.

D40's targetted groups are those new to photography and demand something with better quality than P&S cameras yet have a limiting budget.
in that sense, i doubt Nikon's targetted group of consumers would be one to possess primes ^^
Hopefully Nikon made AF-S 50mm f/1.4 DX in not so far future  . Small, fast, hopefully cheaper than current 50mm f/1.4 AFD  .A lot of the new primes, ie, the super teles, are AF-S.
