Interesting.. KRW predicted it, so his prediction is true. AF-S only is quite an idea to cut the cost of the body. No top LCD panel also.. Looks like a minimalist design!Bummer about the AFS lens only contraint.

are you kidding me? it looks like a mixture of canon 350d + d50... weird shape, design and button. doesn't have the "nikon" solid feel in it... :sticktong
I din come to a conclusion... i just think the design looks weird. infact very weird compared to the other older nikon dSLR.How did you come to that conclusion just by looking at pics?

Check it out!!
No I don't think so.. It looks more like there's a notch there for easier pressing. take a better look at the top left corner button, looks like copy & paste:think:
they haf a D60 way before. a D30 too.
logic thinking would tell most ppl that NIKON will never adopt a 'D60' in their ranks.

Shhhh.... I think that this is a hoax. Like some of you said, D60 is more likely. The specs to me is not likely to be impressive. If it is like a D50 why introduced it as another model with almost the same specs, why not jsut call it D50s (which Nikon is famous for like D70s).
In the last 2 years, I speculated Nikon's direction in DSLR. I suspected that a 8MP or 10Mp cam was going to be the "go in between" the pro D2x and D70. They came with a D200 which is not really a consumer end cam then cam D80. I suspect that D60 would spot a 8MP sensor with all the build and specs of a D80. It just logical step forward. WIth the D3 coming next year with a possibly 16MP (at least) sensor a another logical step would be a D300 with the D2x 12MP sensor or maybe even more (14MP maybe).
Nikon's strategy has always been consistent. The odd numbered series is often replaced by a more superior even numbered series in the consumer market. While in the pro range, the single digit will keep adding with improvement using appendix like H, S, X, Xs, etc.
However, I am quite sure the DSLR market strangle hold on pricing will drop grastically when the bubble burst. especially since the entry (or re-entry) of Sony (with Konica-Minolta) into the DSLR market. Currently, they are the biggest boy on the block with years of experience in R&D (in fact they developed Nikon's earlier sensors). Sony's style of mass marketing and the ability to take the market share in short time will overtake Canon and Nikon in the next few years.
wahhh sian. i expected the new model to be an upgrade not downgrade. =\
I think if it really only use AF-S, it might be a flop. Most people who buy entry-level will look for cheaper lenses.
Better quality AF-S lenses are expensive. They won't be able to use third party lens except for maybe Sigma HSM lenses. They will not have the prime lenses except the AF-S 105mm f/2.8 VR Micro.
I am surprised at Nikon taking such a gamble.
Dont forget the AFS 18-55 kit lens and the AFS 55-200 lens are both quite cheap. These are most likely the lenses that will go with the D40 for most buyers.
it's been made official according to this website
