Nikon D3s discussion thread

I think it would not be surprising to find Pros shooting with a D3s. Are there any leisure shooters who uses it as well?

I'm a leisure shooter.

...it goes to show that leisure shooters are more likely to buy high end cameras.....pros except high end pros are likely to weight cost and income.

I use SB900... But with the D3s + 24-70mm f2.8, the weight is a killer! I had since begun making good use of the low-light capabilities of the D3s, and I must say, the results are pleasing! Most of the "clients" I encountered prefer the natural light photographs.

Client? you are doing photography for a living? how do you max out your d3s in low light, i'm spoil with choice with the range of ISO... lol

Nope actually I don't do photography for a living, but still anyone that asks for services will be referred to as 'clients'...

I'm kinda lazy too, I'll max my Auto-ISO at Hi1.0, which I find is still quite acceptable in terms of usability of the images. Most of them time, the camera don't even reach anywhere near there though.

Ha! i'm in the exact case as you, using my d3s for leisure and set my auto ISO to high. So i think it normal to use auto ISO. anyway the camo skin of your display pic is illustration only right? i'm still looking at body armor for d3s but it seems rare.

I use Auto ISO to 1600. From film days, never shoot more than 400, but with the D3s, now trying 3200. Unbelievably clean.

Haha, it's not a camo skin... It's actually the photo of the actual camera used by Joe McNally during one of his shoots, where it was mounted on a bracket to shoot moving dirt track cars. That was what the camera ended up becoming... I find it interesting so I used it as an avatar, hehe. :bsmilie:

The images are commercially acceptable up to 12800... Don't be apprehensive to go higher, cos that's what D3s is meant for anyway. Actually, under normal day time circumstances, the camera will rarely reach anywhere near there. I just set Auto-ISO to high so I can react fast enough to unprepared / unforeseen scenes to capture. :bsmilie:

I don't have the D3s, anyway, besides the ultra high ISOs, the 11 and 9 fps is like machine guns firing, very intoxicating

Indeed! The best part of it is that the hit-rate is actually pretty good. :bsmilie:

i rented the D3S for a couple of events last year, and these are the features that I like the most -

1. High workable ISO (12800)
2. 9 fps
3. Continuous buffer that allows me to shoot 36-40 RAW format shots in burst mode. unbelievable.

What kinda events do you shoot? Do you always use 9fps when shooting non-sports events?

yah... 9fps fun... then you realised that you have to start deleting pics at home... :sweatsm:

I'll usually limit it with Continuous (Low) settings (i.e. 5fps). Too high, cannot handle. Disk-space very fast used up. Haha... :bsmilie:

There lack of Pop Up Flash stopped me from getting the D3s.
Current happliy shooting with the D700, the pop up flash do come handy at times:)

I used to think like that too. But what I don't like about pop up flash is that I get a shadow cast caused by the lens, even when I remove the lens hood. (Think 105mm and above)

So to me, pop up flash is over-rated and it's not that practical all the time.

CLS is also not that flexible as in I may not always want the pop up flash to fire (because of the shadow cast issue). Yes I can diffuse or gaffer the pop up flash but that's just a waste of energy and makes my 5K setup looks weird and distract my subjects.

So I would be happy for pop up flash if Nikon made these improvements:
- The ability to adjust/increase the height of the pop up flash
- AND/OR The ability to tilt the angle of the pop up flash (like SB400)
- The ability for the pop up flash to be in commander mode without firing

Then there will be a deal breaker for me.

Else for my D700, I still have to use an external flash most of the time because I can't ensure there will not be shadow all the time. Meaning, the pop up flash is useless to me even if I have it. Yes, I rather exchange the pop-up flash for the ISO performance of D3s.

i shoot dance ..so those 3 points mentioned are most important to me..
non sports events, no need 9fps.. else all the photos will look more or less the same:bsmilie:
