Nikon D3100 and the four new lenses

I'm excited to see the 4 new lenses. And I think Nikon played this marketing strategy correctly.

55-300 can pair up with existing kit lenses, so kits will effectively cover 18-300.

85 with VR is a great welcome. I'm also interested to see how 24-120 performs. There too many negative reviews about the predecessor such that this lens isn't widely used.

Lastly, 28-300, is slightly faster than tamron's version. Currently,there is a lack of superzoom lenses in the FX market. This should fill the gap for awhile, and I'd hope to see more capable superzooms for FX users.

The people on NR say that the price in Europe is usually more expensive than in other countries. They say that in the USA, the price would be around the same values in USD. So yup not really 2x, maybe around 1.6x-1.8x I think.

the price point does not seems like its a replacement for D3000. looks like trying to squeeze a modified d90 into a d3000 body. looks good if it is true thou.

That's rubbish, I think the D90 ergonomics and controls are much better than the D3000. I don't see why DSLRs have to be so small, you can't grip them properly. I'd much rather have a D90 sized body, really. My dream cam would be D300 style controls on a D90 sized body, with (current) FF level high ISO performance

Qns: do you think the ISO ranges are inclusive of the Hi and Lo ranges, or not?... First time anticipating Nikon new releases so I don't know the history of such reports that well.

Agreed, D5000 and below are too small and light to hold. D90 size and weight is good for traveling. Maybe pack FF into a D300 size will be nice, especially for those who has bigger palm like me:bsmilie:

It is just a rumour, don't have too high expectation till Nikon has posted it on its website.

I did not mean what you said was rubbish, I meant that a D90 mod in a D3000 body was rubbish.

I'm excited about the D3100. Did Nikon push the ISO range to compete with Canon's 550D? It's great to see my favorite D3000 cam getting an upgrade. I don't mind them packing D90 into a D3000 body: I really don't need the extra weight.

And the 85mm f1.4 to rent LOL. Not on FF so a bit wasted... plus I can get a truck load of filters + wide angle lenses for DX...

The extra weight is nice if you're not using a super light lens like a kit lens. Even my D5000 feels a little front heavy if I attach a Tamron 17-50 f2.8, which weighs just 434 grams. Add on the small grip and your hands will pretty much die if you attach a heavy lens. Believe me, in prolonged shooting conditions, a heavier body but more balanced weight (e.g. gripped D90/D300 with a 70-200 f2.8) will feel better than a D3000/D5000 with the same setup (and without grip).

Of course, not many people will use a 70-200 on such a body, but the D5000 and D3000 are very good cameras capable of producing very good images, and it's a shame they don't work well with heavy lenses. But you can't have everything in the world.

By the way, they are now discussing what could be the little button/knob thing beside the mode dial. Anyone know what it could be for?

AF should be faster
but VR still lose to VC i think
