How about sticky versus threads instead? That would sastify every newbie comparing the two cameras in question? :bsmilie:

How to make sticky for all such threads?? There are too many

This is like Calsberg, Heineken or Tiger. Your personal choice prevail... Here is my observations:

Nikon: Very photographer centric company (they are more focus optical/camera company compared to Canon), definitely robust camera bodies. Being a bit of underdog in 2003 till 2007, they are getting very agressive in product development and pricing, overall lens line up a still behind Canon. Dependent on Sony for some of the sensor technology, so may not be as flexible in their sensor technology. Likely to reach a stagnation after the recent FX crops of cameras, until the next big breakthrough 3-4 years down the road (this is my guess). But be sure they will come up with some pretty nice breakthrough then.

Canon: Very consumer centric company (they make printer/video cam/camera/notebook/copier etc etc), stronger financial muscle and wider resources reach across various market place. Lead dog in camera world since the turn of century, and will likely to take lead (unless they screw up big time). Widest glass choice (with some of the best lens, and some dog amongst it), width and depth in consumer electronic technologies, build their own sensor, chips, optics, boards, etc. Very marketing focus, hence the issue with overly clear segmentation, which translate to feature supression in their mid to entry versions... But you can count on them to give you top notch flag-ship model (1DMk3 AF issues is a shame, but don't write-off Canon, they will fix it, because the stake is too high for them).

So, between this two great brand and company, which do you choose. It's a bit like choosing between Toyota & Honda; or BMW and Mercedes; Ferrari & Porche; you won't loose by choosing either one.

Actually, I'm officially both Canon and Nikon user, since I do have a Nikon FE film SLR...

lolz why not start with a D90 instead?
fascinated with the movie mode..

Very apt comparison. For me at least, unless you aregoing for the 1-series. You are better off with Nikon's current offering.

However, if you are always looking for the latest and greatest, then either brand with the latest model usually takes the cake. ;)

I do not think one can associate G1 with 'lens reflex' 'cos there's nothing to flip. :bsmilie:

I have a new name for it: CIL (compact interchangeable lens).

I'd just call it DRF. Digital Rangefinder.

I vote for 50D + EFS17-55 + 85L which will have immediate advantages over the alternative. FYI, Nikon version of 17-55 do not have IS. And thier 85 f1.4 also not as good as Canon version.

These are the combo I suggested... And they are my favourite

my is n lies wif my hand and posture as no is and vr can compensate on unsteady hands.... fyi 17-55 is solidly built not plasticky and razor sharp... who needs is/vr if you have the rite posture and a steady pair of hands... and y the heck engineers build monopods and tripods for???? techies just yak and yak and yak....

I'm a Canon user.
My biggest gripe with Canon is the "Auto-ISO". I need Auto-ISO to work with the shutter speed and arpeture settings (in M mode) that I define. Canon can't do this.

I also like the fact that you can control slave flash from the built in flash with the Nikon D300. you have to get the ST-E2 for the Canon, and have 1 more set of batteries to worry about.

I will with a company that is stronger financially, one that makes all the important parts of their camera, especially sensor. If one day, Sony decide to screw up Nikon and stop supplying sensor to Nikon, what is Nikon going to do? Start their R&D in sensor technology?

Who else other than Sony has the FX format litho stepper from Nikon? I think Nikon designed the sensor and running it in Sony fab.

Stronger financially?? LOL...then I hope Sony stop supplying sensors to Nikon, then buy up Nikon, so then we can all convert to Sony camp then use our Nikon F mount lens together with Minolta AF lens on Sony bodies. YAY!

Hi,

If this question was posted a few years ago, I believe the answer would have been a little more obvious, Canon.

However, recently there has been tremendous technology and design advances made by Nikon, a clear "winner" between these few are often difficult to identify.

Let's just say that you will not end up a complete idiot by buying either Nikon or Canon. You can put all the specs side by side and start counting all the beans and bugs but I think you may end up even more confused and no wiser. Reading reviews may help a little but I think the technical details in some of the reviews may not be directly relevant to user experience at times.

I somehow hold a believe that while the sensors technology can be differentiated in the labs, in real life, the lenses often play a bigger part in determining the performance of the camera. The lens creates the image, the sensors merely records what has been created and maybe process it. If the image being created is crappy, no matter what the sensors do, it will still be crappy. If the image being created is really good, most modern sensors will not screw up too badly :D I mean unless you are comparing Akira dSLR vs Canon dSLR, the difference in sensor technology will not result in glaring image quality differences.

Now back to lenses, note that the Nikon F mount has a rather strong support from German lens manufacturers such as Zeiss and Voigtlander, just to name a few. While Zeiss will start making lenses for Canon soon, they have been doing that for Nikon for a while now and, as of now, has a better selection of lenses for Nikon. I also realized that despite some people believing that Canon has better selection and "better performing" lenses as compared to Nikon, Nikon does make some exceptionally good lenses. Undeniably, some of the classic Nikkor lenses are simply legendary.

As someone correctly mentioned, Nikon is and has always been a camera company and Canon were traditionally more of a diversified electronic company. Whether which company has the advantage is beyond the scope of my current discussion. My point is Nikon, being a traditional camera company, naturally has many gems in their (and their partner's) lens arsenal.

But then again, the Canon's EOS mount does have a very strong advantage over Nikon's F Mount in one particular aspect. It is thinner and thus allow adapters to be made for practically any other SLR mount. You can easily find Nikon lens adapter for Canon but the reverse doesn't exist (or does it?).

Having said that, adapters being adapters, have certain disadvantages. You will lose the AF motor capability and your fingers will need to do the twisting manually. While this is generally fine for the manual focus German lenses, I am unclear what would be the impact on lens sharpness and performance when attached on an adapter. Also, it would sound stupid to buy a high end Nikkor lens which price mostly goes to the AF Motor and use it exclusively in manual mode. Besides, mounting Nikkors on a Canon body is bordering blasphemy to many Canon users :D

Also, if you choose Canon, you will get their range of L lenses. The thing about L lenses is that while not all L lenses are exceptionally great, you are assured a certain minimum quality standard. It is like an accreditation system of lenses for Canon. Ofcourse some may not like systems of accreditation....like Zeeke the dog who got an unaccredited degree :)

AS mentioned a gazillion time in this thread, your question is like asking which religion is better. Throughout history, much blood has been spilled over such religious arguments.

Well, actually it is NOT like a religion. For cameras, you can always try first before you decide. I think if you can ask a question like this, you may not be really familiar with any one camera system yet. If still undecided, why don't you try out both systems? I know it sounds insane but a D60 with the 18-55 kit lens (S$949) plus a 1000d/450d with the 18-55 kit lens (S$800+/S$1199) will not even cost more than the 50D + 18-55 kit (quoted as $2299).

And lenses wise, the kit 18-55 lens by both Canon and Nikon are unbelievably sharp lenses.

Which one will you get if u wanted buy?
Nikon D300 and Canon 50D..
Because I wanted to get one of them and very confuse and don't know what to choose.
So wanted to get opinion from you all..
Thanks..

Both are great camera to use !
since 50d is the latest generation of EOS, its feature such better LCD than ever, 15.1 MP and ISO 12,800 capability is the greatest asset

er i think the thread has become N vs C camp. Anyway, i always respect Nikon camera even though i never own one. There is limitation on Canon camera and also some features which you hope it has because Nikon has....

Anyway, just go by your feeling. Both are good cam, and i proud to own one of this 2 cam
;p
