Nikon D2Xs vs Nikon D200

Wow another one. I made one such thread 2 months ago and got whacked for nothing. Simply go with what you need, and what your budget permit. The D2x is build for the pros thus the price tag. While the D200 is for those who like some of the pro specs but don't want the weight and options to go further if need to.

Had a chance to shoot with my friends d200, compared to the d2x i think it can do 90% of what the d2x is capable of and it's alot lighter to carry around. My only complain is the battery does'nt seem to last as long (just carry spares). if you don't use anything larger than a 85mm prime lens much the vertical grip just adds weight. The nikon cameras are still noisier than anything canon is producing but since the d2x I think the noise has been very well controlled like some people have said it looks like film grain, i don't find it objectionable in print. The noise on the D2x and D200 looks different somehow kinda like shooting with different film stock either one seems fine up to ISO 1600 just make sure your exposure is spot on, if you try to lighten up an image the noise starts to get ugly.

No question about it - get the D200. Use half the savings to buy lenses that will last through your next 4 camera bodies (then they change the chip or make it obsolete somehow). Save the other half of the savings for the next camera body, or take the Mrs to holiday and get some nice memories, and photos.

Yea, someone just commented i shd go for a D2Xs instead! Think i will ask Sam (from john316) for advise too. is the mb/vg for D200 worth the money?

Ya..speak to people in this field; particular if any of your friends are photographers..

Sam or Leslie is of great help.. I know them too..However, the decision is yours. More importantly is to estalish what areas of photography you are into..;)

There are lots of camera review forums on the Net, but these are just a brief guide to the systems concerned. YOU MUST know what you are getting into and what you would be doing in the next few years with the stsyem.

Look around and you will see.. I came across someone selling a 3 years D70 with a shutter count of 2800 & another; a D70s of 2 yeras with a shutter count of 1200!!

Whether it is a D200 or D2x; if its for hobby you need to re-evaluate from ground zero..:dunno:

Just my 2 cents worth..

perhaps owning two d200s would be more suitable...

you could outfit one with a wide angle zoom and the other with a telephoto zoom

and never have to change lenses... and it might shoot your photography style better.

Noise is not really an issue if you expose correctly, like what has been said before, if you were fine with d70 noise, then d200 will be great, and D2X will be good in comparison.

Double the weight and price, pointless in my opinion (maybe as a backup body though?)

does double the weight and price mean its pointless, such slippery slope logic indeed!

well, for the price of one heavier d2x... one can buy like 2 d200s.. and have some cash left over for other acessories... and well, the weight isn't really so much of a penalty... if you're committed to a digital SLR system - one of the trade offs is weight...

the real gain... is not needing to keep switching lenses over and over and over again.. you never know when it might come in handy... to go very quickly from the 70mm end to the 35mm end...

just my opinion. same way how sport photographers often have their 400/2.8 and a 70-200 on a second body... and remember the world cup... when the goal scorer runs too close for a 70-200... those that inevitably get the shot.. are those with a 3rd body with an even shorter lens on standby.

plus... you can nicely balance them out on both shoulders with the upstrap. Besides, which would you prefer - to have point cameras out and ready or the lens you need sitting in a bag somewhere?

Thanks! Talked to Sam, as u know, he rather wants me to get D2Xs! haha, Leslie is nice, he is a fellow liverpool fan, anyway i think i will go for D2Xs after much consideration. :) I agree, i do alot of Sports Photography, portraits and landscape. In view of those fields i am interested in, and with some reviews, i think D2Xs probably suit my needs? Any comments? One guy recommended D2H though for Sports when i was shooting at the F1 event up in Sepang. I guess, if i do get a D2Xs i am taking this hobby a step further? yea, my D70 is pretty used.... and i sold it recently.

If you do a lot of sports photography or birding, then you should go for the D2Xs.

Haha, you have just said the key points of what should be made on your decision. :bsmilie:

You should have mentioned this at the very 1st post. ;)

Based on your needs, and on the presumption that you can either buy a D2Xs or a D200. D2Hs might be a good choice. But then, looking at the closeness of the price between a D2Hs and a D2Xs, together with some of your requirement, you might be better off getting a D2Xs.

You will like the speed and handling of the D2Xs, especially in sports photography. Together with other additional functions, etc etc etc.

As for whether taking the hobby any step further, do bear in mind, a camera is just a tool, a better camera is just better tool, it all lies in the finger that press the shutter click.

Yuppers..... sorry shd have made it clear in the first post. :) the main difference is the Nikon multicam 2000 as compared to D200 of only Nikon multicam 1000. Alrightie, getting quotes from the various shops before going down to buy it!

i agree, camera is camera, what matters most is the photographer. So anyone wanna give me some tips? would love to join you guys for some shoots and learn from the more professionals here. :)
