with the 2G SD card provided, how many photos can it stored for the D40/x at the highest resolution with fine compression (not too sure if this is correct term)?

D80 10.1MP can squeeze in 200++ for 2GB at that resolution for JPEG. D40 6MP prob can squeeze in many more (est 300+).

RAW will be much lesser though.
