Nikon Announced D5100

You can choose not to swivel the screen what, it's still a model that lies between the D3100 and D7000. I have no doubt that it will produce great photos, in fact, seeing that it is using the D7000 sensor. But I have doubts regarding the controls of the camera.

True lah. I just don't like the idea. Some magazine even graded 60D above D7000 almost becos of this feature alone. It's just my fanboy unhappiness

It's great to see that the LCD better than it's predecessor. With the HDR feature I think it can give a good fighting chance against Canon 600D.

Scratch whatever I said. After looking through the specs of D5100, other than the LCD swivel, I think it's a great camera!

Didn't expect Nikon to throw in bracketing functions & flash commander mode into this body. This is almost a D90 replacement!

This turned out to be a huge disappointment to me. I was really hoping Nikon would include AF motor for this body because I use swivel screen VERY often. But as I go more into photography I realised my lens choices are extremely limited and generally more expensive due to the need to have BIM. -.-

This prolly also shows they have no intention to give users like me best of both worlds.

So that's it, will jump ship to Canon hopefully by year end. :(

it's so small and cute, i can actually forget about the need for an EVIL camera already. Heck the need for AF-S. I'll use it as a super-high end PnS plus excellent video camera / travel camera.
Damn good!
(forgoing the BIM helps to make it smaller than most other DSLR cameras)

is this an important feature: 1 cross-sensor (D5100) vs 9 cross-sensors (600D?)?

btw any word when D5100 will be available on our shores?

Yes, I would be interested in a D5100.. when will it reach Singapore?

Turtle San, if video is your thing, u should had gotten canon already. Just one thing I dun know, does canon have AF-F?

They have custom settings (U1 and U2) like the D7000. However, no flash commander mode. They said it is compatible with CLS commander mode using SU-800 as a commander. I would rather buy a D7000 than use a SU-800 on a D5100.

I still have doubts about this camera, they put some "pro" features in like custom settings bank, but it is still not up to the level where you can change settings fast enough. No ISO button (Really, Nikon? Custom settings bank but no ISO button? What are their engineers smoking?), no secondary dial. Also, no high speed sync for flashes means you aren't going to be able to use fill flash properly in outdoor situations, especially with large apertures.

they did, its call the d7000.

aiyo, it's not a pro camera. just a very fun camera for regular use. why complain about having no pro-features?
want some pro features, buy a pro camera la.

Anyway some people who complain about lack of pro features in a non-pro camera also don't have that many AF-D lenses or Pro lenses.

It's not even about comparing w Canon. All canon bodies (including Pro bodies) have no BIM isn't it?

There is consistency in that though. I just don't get why they like to put some pro features in. I rather have all pro features in, or no pro features at all. No point having one or two pro features and leave out the rest. It's gimmicky.

Also, ISO button is definitely not a pro feature, it is one of the most used setting, and yet they still haven't put a button for it. But they have useless buttons like a timer mode button, which people seldom use. Do the engineers there even know which functions are used more? Do they expect all the entry level body shooters to use only auto mode? If so, why even bother with a dial to change aperture? Why even bother to put in the PASM modes?

I don't think so.

Sorry my bad. I thought I these words: "built-in flash" in the section of "Nikon Creative Lighting system" in the specifications page. Sorry that I up hopes for you guys.

Video is not my thing but I make use of swivel screen a lot in my photography (portrait & cosplay most of the time) . I do not have the logistics capability to carry a ladder around when I need to get dynamic compositions.

The lack of AF motor really limits my lens choices. I really wanted a Tokina 11-16. Oh well I shall head to Canon =/ I really liked the handling of my D5000 though. Sigh..

Actually custom banks are more useful than the iso button. Set one custom bank to iso 100. Set the next to auto iso. Done.

I agree, but still, they could have done away with one of the info buttons on the D5000 and made it the ISO button. For the D5100 they use the menu button as one of the info buttons, but still, they could just have one info button (which is the menu button), and set the other info button as the ISO button. However this would not be comfortable as you cannot hold the button and turn the dial. In such a case, they can either put 2 dials in, or shift the rear dial to the front. This would greatly improve the controls of the camera, but I guess they just want to p*ss people off by deliberately making it hard to change essential settings.

As for the info button, press the menu/info button once to switch on the LCD, press again to access the main settings (ISO, quality, etc), press again for camera menu, press again to switch off screen. There is no real need for 2 info buttons.

Aiyo, look at the price of the D5100, let's be fair. We all hope but can't have everything in 1 body. If like that Nikon other model will "die", no one will buy the higher priced D7K etc. To be it is a sure & positive upgrade from my current D5K with the new sensor, LCD plus the bonus ( which yet to be tested ) of the new features & settings.
So, it will be a go ahead & get for me ....

Trouble with Nikon is they leave out essential functions but put in some pro functions. As I said earlier, it should be either no "pro" functions at all, or everything should be in. Basic settings like aperture, shutter speed and ISO should be easily accessible (I do not consider ISO setting to be a "pro" function). I don't find a 6 step process just to change ISO to be very intuitive

1. Press info button to switch on the screen
2. Press the info button again to access the "quick menu"
3. Play with the directional pad to scroll to the ISO setting
4. Press the ok button to access the ISO setting control
5. Scroll down to the ISO you want
6. Press ok to lock in the new ISO speed

With the Canons, you press the ISO button, scroll through with the directional pad or the dial, and then press ok. Much more intuitive. For the higher level Nikons, hold down the ISO button, turn the dial, and you're set. Such questionable design decisions should not be tolerated from Nikon engineers, imo.
